The tournament to determine the first-ever NJPW STRONG Openweight Tag Team champions finally came to an end this weekend.
On July 24th, Mark Davis & Kyle Fletcher, Aussie Open, defeated Christopher Daniels & Yuya Uemura in the finals to become the inaugural NJPW STRONG Openweight Tag Team champions on the High Alert tapings set to be aired at a future date.
The creation of the STRONG Tag Team championship was announced on June 7th on NJPW’s social media account, making it the second championship to be added to New Japan’s North American brand.
Aussie Open would defeat Evil Uno & Alan Angels of the Dark Order in the first round, aired on July 17th and the Stray Dog Army of Barrett Brown & Misterioso in the semi-finals to be aired on July 30th in the final batch of matches from the Ignition tapings.
Aussie Open made their NJPW debut on August 31st, losing to then IWGP Heavyweight tag team champions Guerrillas of Destiny at Royal Quest, but wouldn’t become regulars in the company until late 2021 when they joined Will Ospreay’s United Empire during an attack at a RevPro show.
Aussie Open have held tag team gold in numerous European promotions such as wXw, PROGRESS & Defiant, and recently made their AEW debut on June 9th aiding Will Ospreay in his attack of FTR & Trent Beretta before having two trios matches on Rampage & Dynamite on the build to Forbidden Door.
