NJPW G1 Climax 32 continues its second week with a classic main event between Hiroshi Tanahashi and Tetsuya Naito. You can find the results right here!
The G1 Climax tournament is one of the biggest events in the pro wrestling calendar and this year it’s bigger than ever before. 28 men will battle for a shot at the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship across four blocks of seven.
Two points are earned for every victory, one point is earned for a draw, and zero points are awarded for a loss. The top point scorer in each block will then advance to semi-finals on August 17th, before the finals on August 18th.
The winner of the tournament will earn an IWGP World Heavyweight Championship match at Wrestle Kingdom 17 in January 2023.
Should the current IWGP World Heavyweight Champion, Jay White, win the tournament then he will earn the right to choose his opponent at New Japan’s biggest show of the year.
The night’s G1 bouts started off with El Phantasmo taking on Yujiro Takahashi. ELP took control for much of the first half of the match but Yujiro was able to use his power to make a comeback. ELP rallied, but Yujiro snuck in a lowblow during a near fall to take the advantage. Somehow, ELP was able to kick out of two Pimp Juices and take Yujiro down with Sudden Death. SHO appeared and distracted the referee, but it allowed ELP to hit his own lowblow and then Thunderkiss ’86 for the win.
Next, SANADA battled Taichi in a match that moved seamlessly from slow to fast-paced action with both men having counters to everything the other threw at them. Taichi almost got the best of the LIJ man by focusing on his recently-injured eye, but after a series of counters, SANADA rolled Taichi up to get his first two points.
The ‘Monster Block’ saw Jeff Cobb showcase his impressive strength against the biggest man in the tournament, Bad Luck Fale. Cobb absorbed a lot of punishment from the Rogue General before picking him up for a massive Tour of the Islands for the win.
In a classic main event, Tetsuya Naito and Hiroshi Tanahashi clashed once again. Naito focused a lot of his attacks on the neck of Tanahashi and was able to take control early. Tanahashi had his own focal point, the worn-down knees of Naito, taking advantage with Dragon Screws and even a jumping stomp off the middle rope.
Late in the match, Naito was able to survive three Sling Blades and Aces High to make a big comeback, but as he attempted to end things with Destino, Tanahashi reversed it into a flash pin for the win.
