NJPW G1 Climax 32 Night 1 Results

By Craig Ballantyne. Published 16th July 2022.
G1 Climax 32 Night 1 Okada vs Cobb

NJPW’s G1 Climax 32 tournament kicks off with a stacked card featuring Kazuchika Okada, Will Ospreay, Jay White, and more. You can find the results right here!

The G1 Climax tournament is one of the biggest events in the pro wrestling calendar and this year it’s bigger than ever before. 28 men will battle for a shot at the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship across four blocks of seven.

Two points are earned for every victory, one point is earned for a draw, and zero points are awarded for a loss. The top point scorer in each block will then advance to semi-finals on August 17th, before the finals on August 18th.

The winner of the tournament will earn an IWGP World Heavyweight Championship match at Wrestle Kingdom 17 in January 2023.

Should the current IWGP World Heavyweight Champion, Jay White, win the tournament then he will earn the right to choose his opponent at New Japan’s biggest show of the year.

This year, the tournament kicked off with a huge upset as United Empire’s Aaron Henare overcame the Ace, Hiroshi Tanahashi in their first ever singles meeting.

El Phantasmo more than earned his place in his inaugural G1 in a fast-paced bout against Will Ospreay. However, Ospreay was just too much to overcome and the Commonwealth Kingpin took ELP down with a brutal Hidden Blade to the face for the pin.

In the semi-main event, SANADA took on IWGP World Heavyweight Champion Jay White in a solid match. After numerous near-falls on the champion, SANADA was taken down by a thumb to his recently healed eye and a Blade Runner.

The night was rounded off with Jeff Cobb attempting to improve his 1-3 record against Kazuchika Okada. The Imperial Unit took it to The Rainmaker with his unique combination of strength and agility, but Okada was able to give as good as he got. In the end, Cobb just couldn’t get past the resilience of Okada who used a Rainmaker lariat to open his G1 with a main event victory.

As well as the results below, you can find the full, up-to-date tournament standings right here at Inside The Ropes.
