After a shocking release from the company in July of 2021, Bray Wyatt made his WWE return at Extreme Rules in October of 2022.
His return came after weeks of mysterious QR codes being flashed on screen. The codes led fans to online clues featuring a white rabbit that alluded to Wyatt’s past, leading many fans to believe he was on his way back to the company.
Sure enough, he made a grand entrance at Extreme Rules, and in the following weeks fans were introduced to the mysterious Uncle Howdy, who regularly confronted Wyatt on television. It’s unclear what the relationship between the two characters was supposed to be, but Howdy featured heavily in Wyatt’s presentation, even appearing atop a podium during Wyatt’s Pitch Black match with LA Knight and diving onto Knight in front of the San Antonio crowd.
Ahead of WrestleMania 39, Wyatt announced that he wanted to face the winner of the bout between Bobby Lashley and Brock Lesnar at Elimination Chamber. Lashley emerged victorious in the bout when Lesnar was disqualified after hitting a low blow, and Wyatt began to build his feud with Lashley on television in the following weeks.
However, amidst reports of an undisclosed illness, Wyatt disappeared from television shortly after Elimination Chamber, leaving his WrestleMania status heavily in doubt. WWE was said to have a “backup plan” in place in case Wyatt was unable to appear, but when it came time for the blockbuster event in Los Angeles, Lashley was left without a match and instead appeared in front of the audience to celebrate his Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royal trophy win.
