Off the back of WWE official Adam Pearce setting up a Tag Team Turmoil Match on Raw to decide new Tag Team Champions, it appears that change could also be coming to SmackDown.
The Usos have been a vital part of the success of The Bloodline and hold both sets of Tag Team Titles. The duo won the SmackDown titles back at Money In The Bank in 2021, before adding the Raw titles on the May 20th, 2022 episode of SmackDown. During this period the brothers have become the longest-reigning WWE Tag Team Champions in history surpassing the New Day.
However, this incredible run could be coming to an end.
WWE Undisputed Tag Team Titles Set To Be Split?
On the January 13th episode of SmackDown, Drew McIntyre and Sheamus confronted Adam Pearce backstage. The pair had been cheated out of the Undisputed Tag Team Titles the week before and were also attacked by the Viking Raiders. While McIntyre wanted to face the Raiders, Sheamus demanded a rematch with The Usos.
Pearce’s solution was a tournament to crown new number one contenders for the SmackDown Tag Team Titles. Importantly not the Undisputed Tag Team Titles, seemingly dropping another hint that the titles are about to be split up.
After emerging victorious from Tag Team Turmoil on January 9th, it was confirmed that Judgment Day will soon meet The Usos for the Raw Titles.
In the first round of the new tournament, McIntyre and Sheamus will take on the Viking Raiders.
The issue of unified championships has been a topic of hot conversation in recent months given Roman Reigns complete and utter domination at the top of the card. The Tribal Chief has held the Universal Championship for a staggering 867 days and counting, while he added the WWE Title at WrestleMania 38 almost 300 days ago.
Interestingly, there have been hints that the Undisputed WWE Universal Title could be split ahead of WrestleMania 39, with reports suggesting that the WWE and Universal Championships could be defended on different nights.
