DDT Pro Wrestling’s April Fool 2021 was a noteworthy show, headlined by Jun Akiyama’s latest KO-D Openweight Championship defence, and punctuated by a changing in the guard within the tag team division.
Defending champions Eruption went into the event under something of a cloud, with Kazusada Higuchi and Yukio Sakaguchi both having recently failed in their respective bids for singles gold.
This unfortunate run would continue when they faced the team of HARASHIMA and Big Japan Pro Wrestling’s Yuji Okabayashi, collectively known as Smile Pissari, in the event’s penultimate contest.
HARASHIMA, one of DDT’s most iconic wrestlers and a former ten-time KO-D Openweight Champion, picked up the win after nailing Sakaguchi with the Somato.
In doing so, he lifted the company’s tag team championships for a staggering ninth occasion.
In the main event, Jun Akiyama saw off the challenge of another iconic figure in DDT, Danshoku Dieno.
Much like Higuchi before him, the flamboyant DIeno had taken umbrage with Akiyama’s KO-D Championship reign and sought to unseat the respected veteran.
Though spirited, Dieno’s unique offence was not enough to topple the Champion, who was confronted after the match by HARASHIMA.
The freshly minted tag team champion requested a title shot, which was granted for the upcoming CyberFight Festival event, in exchange for Akiyama and Makoto Oishi receiving a shot at the tag belts (which was agreed for the April 18th show).
