New Report On Length Of AEW Blood And Guts Match On May 5th

By Lyle Kilbane. Published 22nd April 2021.
Blood And Guts

New reports have emerged regarding the Blood And Guts match and the 5th of May edition of AEW Dynamite that it will be on.

The Pinnacle is due to face the Inner Circle in a Blood And Guts bout that takes many of its rules from traditional War Games matches. The five versus five encounter will take place in a steel cage with a roof according to Dave Meltzer. Keeping this match in line with the kind Dusty Rhodes invented.

The first-ever War Games match took place at the 1987 Great American Bash and on one team featured the Four Horseman and their manager, JJ Dillon. They faced a team of The Road Warriors, Paul Ellering, Nikita Koloff, and Dusty Rhodes.

Each team takes a turn to add a new man to the match and the bout can only be won when all ten men have entered the fray. Once the tenth man enters the match, it becomes ‘The Match Beyond’ which could only be won when one team surrendered. According to Meltzer AEW will stick with this rule and have no pinfalls in the match.

One Match Show

Dave Meltzer also reports on the latest edition of Wrestling Observer Radio that the 5th of May edition of Dynamite will be a one-match show. This follows up what announcer Tony Schiavone said on the 21st of April edition of Dynamite.

Meltzer added that there may be other things featured as part of Dynamite on the 5th of May such as pre-taped features and interviews. But with a two-hour show to fill, he also noted that Blood And Guts will have to be a very long match.

The very first War Games match in 1987 laster twenty-six minutes. In recent years NXT has used the same format and kept the War Games name for their version. The longest version of the NXT match came in 2018 at NXT TakeOver: WarGames II. Pete Dunne, Ricochet, and The War Raiders defeated The Undisputed Era in just over forty-seven minutes.
