The New Japan Cup 2021 has its semi-finals set! After a huge series of quarter-final matches, the four remaining men have been decided.
After the shock eliminations seen in the first two rounds of the cup, anticipation for the quarter-finals was high. With high profile matchups such as KENTA vs. Shingo Takagi and SANADA vs. Will Ospreay, big names were guaranteed to be exiting the tournament prematurely. The results for the quarter-finals, as well as a look at the rest of the tournament, can be found below.
Quarter-finals – March 16th and 18th
Shingo Takagi def. KENTA
EVIL def. Toru Yano
David Finlay def. Jay White
Will Ospreay def. SANADA
Shingo Takagi continued his incredible run of eliminations. In the tournament so far he has exclusively eliminated New Japan Cup winners (Hirooki Goto and Kazuchika Okada) or New Japan Cup USA winners (KENTA). However, he is now set to face last year’s winner, EVIL. As former LIJ stabemates, this is sure to be a heated affair between the two bruisers. EVIL remains both the only remaining New Japan Cup winner and the only former IWGP Heavyweight Champion.
The other side of the bracket saw perhaps the biggest upset of the tournament as former New Japan Dojo comrades Jay White and David Finlay faced off. Undoubtedly one of the favourites to win the entire tournament, White was nevertheless eliminated by Finlay, who is on perhaps the most successful run of his career.
The remaining matches are as follows:
Semi-finals – March 20th
Shingo Takagi vs. EVIL
Will Ospreay vs. David Finlay
Final – March 21st
Shingo Takagi or EVIL vs. Will Ospreay or David Finlay
Can EVIL win consecutive New Japan Cups? Will fans be treated to another instalment of Takagi and Ospreay’s incredible rivalry? Or will David Finlay shock the world?
