New WWE Women’s Tag Team Champions were crowned on SmackDown as Natalya and Tamina finally unseated Nia Jax and Shayna Baszler to sit atop the women’s tag team division in the company.
The teams met on SmackDown on Fox in what was a rematch for the titles from Night 2 of WrestleMania 37. Natalya and Tamina outlasted four teams on WrestleMania Saturday to earn their shot at the gold. However, Baszler and Jax proved too strong on that occasion, retaining the title when Natalya passed out in Baszler’s dreaded Kirifuda Clutch.
Since then Jax and Tamina have been in a war of words with both women being part of wrestling’s extended Samoan dynasty. Tamina even scored a victory over Jax on the 23rd of April edition of SmackDown. One week later Natalya and Tamina defeated the champions leading to the title match.
Jax and Baszler seemed to have the advantage as Reginald made a nuisance of himself outside the ring. The referee soon put paid to his shenanigans as the former sommelier was sent to the back. With everything even, Tamina was able to hit her Superfly Splash on Jax to gain the victory and the title.
The win brings Tamina her first major title in her eleven-year WWE career – she briefly held the 24/7 Championship during the Hell In A Cell pay-per-view in October 2019. The win adds to Natalya’s accolades of holding both the WWE Divas and SmackDown Women’s Championships.
Natalya and Tamina are now the seventh different teams to hold the title that was first won inside the Elimination Chamber in February 2019. That match was won by the inaugural champions, Bayley and Sasha Banks. Ironically, Nia Jax and Tamina teamed up in that contest but were eliminated by both The Boss ‘N’ Hug Connection and Fire and Desire.
