More details have been revealed about the deal which has seen former NXT announcer Mauro Ranallo sign with IMPACT Wrestling to call the Rebellion main event.
That main event will see AEW World Champion Kenny Omega face the Unified IMPACT Wrestling World Champion Rich Swann. Swann defeated TNA World Champion Moose to unify both that and Swann’s IMPACT Title and go on to face Omega. The bout is being billed as ‘Title vs. Title.’
AEW and IMPACT’s working relationship became apparent when IMPACT executive Don Callis appeared on AEW programming as a guest commentator. At the ‘Winter Is Coming’ edition of AEW Dynamite in December 2020, Callis helped Omega defeat Jon Moxley to become AEW World Champion.
Since then Callis has spearheaded a group featuring Omega and former IMPACT Tag Team Champions, The Good Brothers. This group has since recently re-aligned with former Bullet Club stablemates The Young Bucks. The Bucks recently turned on Moxley during a match on Dynamite and have unleashed an attitude reminiscent of the one they had during their time wrestling in Japan.
Ranallo And Shamrock Reportedly Both Sign Deals
The former voice of NXT Mauro Ranallo was recently announced as being the commentator for the main event of Rebellion between Omega and Swann. Some more details have since been made available about his deal by Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer.
Meltzer noted that Ranallo is only slated to do the main event to make the match feel special. Current AEW announcer Jim Ross had been used that way previously in WWE. Ross was called into action to announce the main events of WrestleMania 15 and 33. He filled that role even though he was not a regular TV commentator at the time.
According to the report IMPACT’s parent company, Anthem has signed a deal with Ranallo and MMA legend Frank Shamrock. The deal entails voice-over work on video packages to build the match. It also entails hosting a documentary entitled ‘This Is Rebellion’ which is due for release before the event.
Rebellion takes place on Sunday, April 25th on a closed set due to the continuing pandemic. Also announced for the event is Deonna Purrazzo defending the Knockouts Title against Tenille Dashwood. The Good Brothers also challenge FinJuice for the IMPACT Tag Team Championships.
