More Details On Matt Riddle Name Change

Matt Riddle in the WWE ring.

Last week, Matt Riddle lost his first name – purely going under the moniker of ‘Riddle’ going forward on WWE RAW.

On this week’s Monday Night Live, Fightful Managing Editor Sean Ross Sapp discussed the name change and revealed more details as to the decision and Vince McMahon’s involvement.

Speaking on how Riddle “doesn’t have a ton of friends in the locker room,” Sapp would reveal how the former NXT Superstar “won some people over with that match” with Sheamus last week.

“I heard from several wrestlers who were like, ‘Yeah, we thought he was going to be boo-boo-faced because he was going to lose to Sheamus really quick after debuting on RAW. We thought he was just going to go out there and mope around but he didn’t, he made Sheamus look really great.’ Sheamus was thankful of that and, apparently when they came through, Vince McMahon was very fired up about it.”

Sean Ross Sapp would also speak to how Matt Riddle made a good impression on Vince McMahon earlier this year in a meeting, which is something Riddle would echo in an interview with myself shortly thereafter said meeting had taken place, back in May.

“I was in Vince McMahon’s office just three weeks ago, before this thing broke out. I was in headquarters talking to him – and, yeah, we mentioned the heat I have with certain people but, at the end of the day, he signs the cheques, he makes it happen for me and they’re in control, not the talent.

“If employer’s happy and I can make them money and make them a profit, and I’m worth my weight and I’m pulling my weight, I don’t see a problem. To answer your question, yes, some people I have heat with. But most of it’s just high school, catty, ‘He said this’, people who just can’t take a joke or a work.”

Sapp also spoke about how the match left a “big impression” on Vince McMahon, urging a call to take place last Thursday Thursday where Vince McMahon and Riddle discussed the changes to his character.

“I do know that they had pitched a more serious thing and apparently a little bit of a push, it would not surprise me to see him and on Team RAW as early as tonight even though he already lost to Sheamus – but yeah, things looking good for Matt Riddle in WWE.”

Sean Ross Sapp would go on to say that Riddle will be a little more light-hearted outside the ring, but a little more serious inside the ring.
