MJF Reportedly Considering Not Re-Signing With AEW

By Adam Morrison. Published 12th May 2022.
MJF

Although he’s one of the top stars in All Elite Wrestling, a new report suggests MJF may not stick around when his contract expires in 2024.

Signing with All Elite Wrestling in January 2019 on a five-year deal, MJF has since been positioned as one of the top names in the promotion. ‘The Salt of the Earth’ is constantly in the headlines for a range of outstanding matches and segments, with some of his best work coming against Cody Rhodes, Chris Jericho, and CM Punk.

While the three-time Dynamite Diamond Ring winner is currently in the midst of a feud with former bodyguard Wardlow, reports suggest MJF may already be looking at a life beyond AEW. Fightful Select reports that he is considering departing the company when his contract expires in 2024, where he would primarily jump ship to WWE.

It was recently reported that contract discussions between MJF and AEW left both parties frustrated, with many believing Maxwell Jacob Friedman isn’t as close to re-signing with AEW as first thought. It’s said that MJF is currently leaning towards leaving AEW, which would make him the second high-profile AEW departure following Cody Rhodes.

The last few months have seen MJF tease signing with WWE when his contract expires, with these sentiments being genuine, rather than in character. Of course, a lot can change with one-and-a-half years left on his current deal, with contract negotiations between MJF and AEW still ongoing.

Widely regarded as one of the most charismatic wrestlers today, MJF would be a huge loss for All Elite Wrestling, having proven that you don’t need to be a champion to be considered the top guy in the company. He’s not challenged for a singles championship since failing to dethrone then-AEW World Champion Jon Moxley at the 2020 All Out pay-per-view.

AEW has recently lost a number of its original roster members, including Joey Janela, Marko Stunt, and The Dark Order’s Stu Grayson, all of whom didn’t have their contracts renewed.
