Mike Chioda has seen a lot during his three decades with WWE and that certainly includes some real bad gimmicks.
The former head WWE official did his usual “Monday Mailbag” on AdFreeShows.com and Chioda was asked about his favorite and least favorite gimmick while with the company. Hands-down, Chioda said it was the Gobbledy Gooker.
“I remember everybody was wondering what the f–k was going to pop out of that egg. [When it happened], everybody was like, ‘What the f–k is that?’ It was the worst f–ing gimmick that ever popped out of that thing. That was easily the worst gimmick I have ever experienced.”
If you’re unfamiliar with who (and what) the Gobbledy Gooker was, the notorious bird made its debut at the 1990 Survivor Series, just in time for Thanksgiving. Hector Guerrero had the honors of literally unhatching from a giant egg dressed in a ridiculous turkey costume. The anticipation was built over the course of time as the egg was taken to live events and shows before the reveal was finally made on PPV and it goes down as one of the most underwhelming moments in the company’s history because of that.
What Was Mike Chioda’s Favorite Gimmick?
Serendipitously enough, Mike Chioda’s favorite gimmick happened to debut at Survivor Series 1990 as well and that was none other than The Undertaker.
“The entrance and everything else used to blow you away every time you had seen it. Because they put so much oomph into it — even on Raw and everything, but especially at SummerSlams, WrestleManias, and the other big pay-per-view events. That has to be, by far, one of the best gimmicks in professional wrestling.”
Very much the ying to the Gooker’s yang, The Undertaker could arguably go down as one of the greatest debuts in WWE history and unlike his goofy feathered colleague, The Deadman stood the test of time. Chioda sure has a history with Taker too as he’s officiated a lot of his memorable bouts, both good and bad.
