Mick Foley has discussed his brutal hardcore match with Edge at WrestleMania 22 and says the match nearly didn’t happen due to Vince McMahon’s own match.
In February 2006 Foley refereed a match for the WWE Championship between Edge and John Cena. After Cena defeated The Rated-R Superstar, Edge attacked Foley. This then led to a feud between the pair and Foley challenging Edge to a hardcore match at WrestleMania 22.
At the same time, WWE Chairman Vince McMahon was on a collision course with Shawn Michaels for a match at ‘The Show of Shows’. With that match set to be fought under hardcore rules as well, the kibosh was nearly put on Edge and Foley’s stipulation.
Discussing the events on WWE Untold, Foley explained:
“The one thing that has to be said is that this match almost never happened at all. Mr. McMahon became involved in a match with Shawn Michaels that was going to be a hardcore match, and it was suggested that Edge and I do a steel cage instead, and I was okay with that. I was just a visitor coming back and it was Edge who said ‘No! This is what we were promised and this is what we’re going to get’, he went into Mr. McMahon’s office by himself.”
“Edge came out and said ‘we’ve got our match’, and looking back on it, Edge and I could have had a really good cage match, but I don’t think I’d be talking about it today had Edge not fought for what he believed in.”
Had the two superstars met in a cage, it would have been only the second cage match in WrestleMania history. At WrestleMania 2 Hulk Hogan defeated King Kong Bundy in a steel cage by escaping over the top.
Foley and Edge’s gruelling match ended after Edge speared Mick Foley to the outside through a flaming table. The iconic moment has since lived on through highlight packages over the years.
Mick Foley also revealed the inspiration behind him wrapping his body in barbed wire during the match. Edge then injured himself when he speared Foley wrapped in the unforgiving wire.
