Mick Foley Reveals Inspiration For Barbed Wire Spot At WrestleMania 22

Mick Foley has revealed that he stole a now famous spot during his WrestleMania 22 clash with Edge, from a somewhat unlikely source.

Mrs Foley’s baby boy made his entrance at the Allstate Arena in Illinois, not in his famous red and black flannel, but in blue and grey. Something that was picked up by Joey Styles on commentary. It was a detail, which although slightly odd, wasn’t massively important. Until it was.

After the initial skirmishes, Edge hit Foley with a Spear, but recoiled as he did so. As a confused crowd and a now bloodied Edge gathered themselves, all became clear. Foley, ever the innovator, had wrapped himself in barbed wire.

Reflecting on the match, and the new WWE Untold documentary looking back at the clash, Foley has revealed where he found inspiration for the spot. Appearing on WWE’s The Bump, the hardcore legend has explained how he reinvented a spot he saw back in WCW in 1999, involving Bret Hart and Goldberg.

“Look, I’m admitting I stole that spot from Bret Hart and Bill Goldberg. Jake Roberts told me in 1992 that ‘a wise man knows where to steal his material.’ WCW had done a great spot, we call it a spot, where Goldberg had speared Bret, but Bret had a 25-pound weight taped to his midsection. So I thought, ‘hey if it worked with a 25-pound weight it would work with barbed wire as well. So obviously I wasn’t comfortable those first few moments, but I guess I was luring Edge into the spear. That was a great reaction when he hit me with the spear, but he was the one who came out the worse for wear. Then the reveal is yeah, I had barbed wire around my midsection. That’s using the old bean right there [taps on his head]. That’s what happens when you’re a New York Times #1 Best-Selling author [laughs].”

Mick Foley would go on to lose the match, after being on the end of another Spear. This time from the ring apron, to the floor, through a table which had been set on fire.

While Mick Foley would hop in and out of retirement up until finally calling it a day in 2012, Edge was forced to hang up his boots in 2011 due to the results of a serious neck injury.

That is until the 2020 Royal Rumble when the Ultimate Opportunist made the unlikeliest of comebacks. After being side-lined through injury for much of 2020, Edge returned again at the 2021 Royal Rumble lasting from start to finish to claim victory.

Since his triumph Edge chose to face Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 37, while also becoming embroiled in a feud with Daniel Bryan along the way.

From the resulting chaos, Adam Pearce added Daniel Bryan to the Universal Title match at the ‘Showcase of the Immortals. The main event on night two of the extravaganza, will now see Roman Reigns defend his championship against both Edge and Daniel Bryan.

Inside The Ropes will have live coverage of the show when WrestleMania 37 night 1 kicks off at 1am BST on Saturday April 10th, followed by night 2 at 1am on Sunday April 11th!
