WWE Hall of Famer Mick Foley has revealed the greatest wrestling match he has ever witnessed in person, naming the iconic WrestleMania 13 clash between Bret Hart and “Stone Cold” Steve Austin.
Speaking in an interview at the For The Love Of Wrestling convention, Foley was asked to pick the best match he had personally seen live. Without hesitation, he pointed to the legendary encounter from 1997’s WrestleMania.
“In person, oh man. I’d say Austin and Bret Hart at WrestleMania 1997,”
Foley stated. The match, which took place on 23 March 1997 at the Rosemont Horizon in Chicago, Illinois, was a No Disqualification Submission contest with UFC fighter Ken Shamrock serving as the special guest referee. It is widely regarded as one of the greatest matches in WWE history, featuring the famed double turn that cemented Hart as a villain and launched Austin’s meteoric rise as a fan favourite.
Despite not being the main event of the night, the Hart-Austin bout stole the show and received critical acclaim. It played a pivotal role in shaping the direction of WWE’s Attitude Era, with Austin’s defiant, bloodied image becoming one of the most enduring visuals in wrestling history.
The match also received a rare five-star rating from wrestling journalist Dave Meltzer, a testament to its significance and impact on the industry.
