Whilst speaking to Comic Book, Mercedes Martinez opened up about why she felt that her pairing with Robert Stone was awkward.
Mercedes Martinez has recently made it clear that she is in the hunt for the NXT Women’s Championship by attacking Io Shirai. She is also in the Women’s Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic teaming up with Toni Storm. Before this however, she was joining forces with Robert Stone & Aliyah, as part of the Robert Stone Brand. Mercedes discussed her time with Stone, Aliyah, and gave her thoughts on the Robert Stone Brand itself.
Yeah, I think it was an awkward pairing, but I think we fed off of each other, and I think the way I looked at it was I had to focus on my in-ring stuff. Anything outside of the ring, that was the whole point of the Robert Stone Brand and his job, was to make sure he made a match for me, focus on the business side of it while I focus on my training, the working out, and focus on what I need to do in the ring.
And somehow, someway, it just didn’t work out. His dynamic was different. The dynamic was pairing me up with Aliyah. And it was like a little sister, big sister type of thing, but sometimes, egos clash. I’m a no-nonsense type of a wrestler and a person, and Aliyah’s like this little, annoying, little person and Robert Stone just wasn’t the right fit for me at that time. It worked for what it had to work for, and it got me to where I had to get to, but it wasn’t the right fit for that time.
It’s clear there were differences within the team, Mercedes feeling that it just wasn’t the right fit at the time to be part of the group – both ego’s and in-ring styles were far too dissimilar between herself, Aliyah and Stone.
Martinez was part of the Robert Stone Brand in 2020 during her storyline with Rhea Ripley, then moving over to RAW to form part of the RETRIBUTION group. Since, she’s now back in NXT both going solo in her hunt for the NXT title but also dabbling with partnerships with this latest pairing with Toni Storm.
Martinez & Toni Storm competed on NXT last night against Kacy Catanzaro & Kayden Carter. An explosive match ending when Kacy Catanzaro hit an incredible “multi-rotation spinning moonsault into a 450” and the underdogs took the victory to progress to the next round.
