Former WWE Women’s Champion Melina has admitted that she was expecting to have a bigger role when she returned at the 2022 Royal Rumble.
In the women’s Royal Rumble match Melina made her long-awaited return to a WWE ring. The former champion entered the match at number two, effectively giving her a short one-on-one bout with the first entrant Sasha Banks. The moment was not lost on the star who was visibly moved by the reception that she received from the crowd.
While many fans were expecting to see a lengthy back and forth between the pair and a strong run for the veteran, Melina was eliminated in under a minute.
Her exit was met with disappointment by a number of fans as well as former stars such as Gail Kim.
Taking to social media reflect on the event, Melina thanked the fans for welcoming her back, and Sasha Banks for being the perfect opponent.
The star also responded to a fan who said they thought she would be a bigger part of the match, replying “Same here” with a laughing emoji.
In the days after the event, it has been reported that there were a number of issues with both the men’s and women’s Royal Rumble matches. With regard to the women’s match, it was called a “mess” by some participants and “complete chaos” by another talent.
It was also noted that one former Superstar turned down the opportunity to be in the match when it became clear that TJ Wilson wouldn’t be involved.
Wilson hasn’t been involved in producing any matches for a number of weeks and it said to have become frustrated backstage.
The match was eventually won by a returning Ronda Rousey, who eliminated Charlotte Flair to grab the win.
