Matt Hardy has recalled being greeted backstage by John Cena after he and his brother Jeff returned to WWE at WrestleMania 33.
Having been away from the company for a number of years, WWE fans were left shocked when the Hardy Boyz were announced as last minute entrants into the Ladder Match for the Raw Tag Team Titles. This elation only increased when the tag team legends scored the win on their first night back with the company.
John Cena Welcomed The Hardy Boyz Home At WrestleMania 33
Matt Hardy recently reflected on that famous night on his podcast, The Extreme Life of Matt Hardy. The multi-time Tag Team Champion revealed that the brothers were met backstage by John Cena after their match. Hardy said that Cena was quick to welcome them “home,” something which held extra significance coming from WWE’s ultimate ‘company man.’
“Yeah, I remember we came up, it was a slap of the hand and a hug and he said welcome back home. That was from John, and John, very much a company guy, you know, when he was going to be the top guy that WWE kind of was building their brand around. He was going to be a company guy, and he was going to, you know, see WWE as his home. I couldn’t see him going anywhere else because that was his home. He takes a lot of pride in still coming back and doing WWE stuff, even though he’s like this, you know, amazing actor who’s doing all these great projects all around the world.”
Matt Hardy remained with WWE until March 2020 when he left the company following the expiry of his contract. Later that month the star made his All Elite Wrestling debut on Dynamite. Jeff Hardy stayed with WWE until being released after acting erratically at a live event in December 2021. The star joined his brother in AEW three months later.
