AEW star Matt Hardy has discussed an unusual assignment given to him and brother Jeff by JBL that involved cracking open a six-pack while driving.
Matt Hardy is currently one of the elder statesmen of AEW but back in the mid-nineties, he and his brother Jeff were an enhancement tag team regularly featured on WWE television.
Speaking on his Extreme Life of Matt Hardy podcast, the elder Hardy brother recalled the treatment doled out by JBL during that time in the WWE locker room and the unusual hazing that was given out by the WWE Hall of Famer:
“Bradshaw was the guy who had kind of been given the assignment of testing all the younger talent in his locker room. That was kind of his deal to kind of see where they are, you know, are these people trustworthy? Do they belong in our fraternity, and whatnot, that was almost the job he was given.”
“So one thing that pops in my mind when you start thinking about Bradshaw, when we were doing these early house shows, and we were wearing tights and whatnot, we were at one show and I remember he came up to us and said ‘Hardys, you know, the audience is really starting to like you guys a little bit. You’re working real hard. But you know, we have a very special assignment so that you can one day fit into the locker room.’”
“He said, ‘I want you to drive to the next town, which is about three and a half hours away. And I want you guys to get a six-pack of beer each.’ He said ‘I want you to start drinking the beers and then throw them at street signs. And I want to know, does your percentage get better or worse? You know, the more drunk you get, give me a full report tomorrow.’”
“And then we ended up driving obviously, Jeff and I didn’t drink at that time. And once again I want to say this too. I’m not saying he was suggesting drinking and driving. He just gave us this silly assignment as far as throwing bottles at street signs.”
Matt Hardy explained that he told JBL the next day that he and his brother didn’t drink and that didn’t go down well with the star:
“Just you know, just once again, that’s almost like the hazing process where they f*ck with you a little bit. Just kind of see how you’ll react to it. And the next day we’re in there and I remember getting upset. He said ‘Well how did it go last night Hardys?’ I said ‘Oh, well, I just need to tell you something’ and Jeff’s like, ‘don’t Matt.'”
“[I said] We don’t drink. He said, ‘You don’t drink? What kind of freaks are you two?’ And then we’d say ‘Oh, we’re so sorry. We don’t drink that. Thanks, Mr. Bradshaw,’ and he’d say ‘go to hell.’ And we get that for like four weeks straight every time ‘Hello, how are you today Mr. Bradshaw’ ‘Go to hell! Go to hell!’ So it really depended if you had heat or not how much you liked JBL during these days.”
