Matt Hardy has given fans some interesting news in regards to where he might be wrestling in the future.
Like many wrestlers in 2024, Hardy is nearing the end of his current deal and is assessing his options before choosing to commit to a company for the next stage of his career. Despite the fact that the veteran has praised AEW on numerous occasions and the leadership of Tony Khan, the former WWE star was spotted at a recent Raw taping in his home state of North Carolina, sparking speculation that he may not remain with the company when his contract expires.
While there was a time when it seemed as if certain stars remaining with their respective promotions seemed like a guarantee, reports of top WWE stars such as Drew McIntyre and Becky Lynch not signing new deals along with NJPW mainstay Kazuchika Okada becoming All Elite means that nothing is a certainty in terms of who will sign where.
Speaking on his Extreme Life podcast, Hardy did share with the fans that negotiations have reached the next stage and that he has been presented with a new deal from AEW. However, Hardy also stated that this contract has not been signed:
“There is a little news to go along with my contract negotiations. I have an AEW contract sitting in front of me for a few years, and I’m looking through it, deciding what I want to do going forward. There’s obviously still some options, I gotta make sure that I’m aware of the ins and outs of the contract, and I want to make sure everything is up to par as far as what I want it to be. Because once again, as I say pretty often, I know that I only have a couple more years left of doing this, and I want to make the most out of those years, whatever it may be.
I want to be optimised in whatever I am doing, so that’s very important to me. I’m very happy to be invited to return to AEW and work for AEW for the foreseeable future. But we shall see, because right now I’m just going to be weighing out the options. There’s a couple of things out there. And I would say in the next month, I should probably know what my immediate future is.”
When co-host Jon Alba asked if he had an offer in front of him, Hardy responded “I do.” Continuing, Hardy explained what he wanted out of his new deal, regardless of who it was from:
“Once again, just legacy is very important to me, knowing there’s only a couple years left of doing this. Schedule is very important to me, because I want to spend as much time as I can with my family, that is very important. And once again, if I am working with Jeff, it is very important to me that The Hardys are optimised, it’s very important that The Hardys they go out on a strong note. That’s, that’s what’s important to me.”
When Did Matt Hardy Last Wrestle?
Competing more sparingly in recent months, Hardy’s last match took place on the January 3rd episode of AEW Rampage. The match saw Matt and Jeff Hardy team with Mark Briscoe to defeat Kip Sabian, The Butcher and The Blade.
