Live Action Marvel Lucha Libre Show Announced For Disney+

Top Mexican promotion Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide has announced the launch of a live-action wrestling show coming to Disney+ in association with Marvel. The series is scheduled to premiere in Mexico on December 21st, though it’s yet to be made official if this will be a worldwide showcase or exclusive to Mexico.

The confirmation was made during October 15th’s Triplemania XXX: Chapter 3 show, with a trailer being aired for The Origin of the Mask during the card. Featured in the trailer were El Aracno, El Leyenda Americana, El Terror Purpura, El Venenoide, La Estrella Cósmica, and La Picadura Letal.

ESPN’s Marc Raimondi compared the vibe of the trailer to that of the uber-popular Lucha Underground series. Again, it’s yet to be confirmed whether this will be solely a wrestling show or if storylines will also play a focal part, a la the defunct El Rey Network series.

AAA And Marvel’s Relationship Will Be Bolstered

The series, which is already exciting fans on social media, is all part of Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide’s working agreement with Marvel Entertainment. In October 2020, the latter announced a relationship with the popular Mexican wrestling organisation to expand the culture of wrestling within the country.

Luis Lomeli, the Walt Disney Company’s Head of Licensing and Consumer Products for Mexico, addressed their alliance as an exciting collaboration in a press release issued after the trailer was revealed:

“This collaboration with AAA represents an opportunity to participate in an iconic part of Mexican culture, such as wrestling and offering attractive content and experiences to the whole family that can be further celebrated with spectacular consumer products inspired by this discipline which is valuable for fans and consumers.

While developing these storytelling and content creation initiatives, the premise has been to stay true to the essence of Mexican wrestling at all times by bringing together AAA’s experience in terms of wrestling and Marvel’s experience in terms of story and character development. The potential of wrestling is unlimited. Its quality, colour and talent are increasingly valued in the world. Based on this unique and original creative platform, we will develop different product lines such as clothing, footwear and accessories, toys, household and school items.”

Of the characters thus far confirmed, El Aracno is inspired by Spider-Man with his supposed father being El Venenoide, El Leyenda Americana is intended to be Captain America, and El Terror Purpura is Thanos.

H/T to Comicbook.
