Mark Henry has recalled advocating for Tony Khan to bring in a notable signing as soon as they became a free agent.

Back in September 2023, multiple names were released from their WWE contracts shortly after the UFC merger and Endeavor takeover had been completed. Among the names listed was Shelton Benjamin, who saw his second run come to a premature end. Still able to perform at a high level and regarded as one of the most underrated and underutilised stars of the modern era, many hoped that the former Intercontinental Champion would be able to have one more run.

In October 2024, Benjamin arrived in All Elite Wrestling and was introduced as MVP’s newest associate. Having his debut match against Lio Rush, Benjamin once again reminded the world that he could still go. Speaking about Benjamin’s debut on Busted Open Radio, Henry recalled telling Khan to sign him as soon as the news broke:

“The first day that Shelton got let go, I went to Tony and I said, ‘Tony, you got to pick him in. Bring him in. Let me work with him. Anything. He’s the guy. Nothing happened. I’m glad that they’ve seen the error of their ways and they got him on board. Shelton is special, you’ve got to use him like he’s special. It’s only going to be good for everybody in the long run.”

When discussing Benjamin’s potential in the company, the Hall of Famer added that more championships could be coming to the veteran:

“He can be the TNT Champion. You got to take steps, you can’t just go straight to the top. Let him build himself to the AEW World Championship.”
