Kazuchika Okada Sends Message To NJPW Fans Amid Uncertain Future

Major Update On Kazuchika Okada's Future

Kazuchika Okada is officially a free agent.

The Rainmaker took to social media at 1 minute past midnight on February 1st to inform the world of the news. Posting an emotional thank you to New Japan, Okada reflected on his near 2-decade journey with the promotion:

“Thank you for your support for 17 years of New Japan Pro-Wrestling!
Thank you very much!
I laughed, got angry, cried, and it was great!
I look forward to the remaining three matches as a freelancer

One of the biggest stars in the history of New Japan, many never thought that this day would come. Despite there being rumours towards the end of 2023 that Okada would depart the promotion, many believed that the former IWGP Heavyweight Champion would re-sign and eventually retire with the promotion. However, shortly after Wrestle Kingdom 18, Kazuchika Okada released an official statement to announce that he would not be renewing his contract with NJPW.

Although now a free agent, Okada has agreed to compete in 3 final matches before exploring new opportunities. The Rainmaker’s final match will see him face off against Hiroshi Tanahashi at The New Beginning in Osaka.

What’s Next For Kazuchika Okada?

It is widely believed that the legend of New Japan will be signing with a major promotion in the United States later in the year. Along with multiple reports that this is the case, Okada recently filed a trademark for his name with the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

With the strong relationship with New Japan and Tony Khan reportedly prepared to pay a high price, many are predicting that Okada’s future home will be with AEW. While there were rumours that Kazuchika Okada may sign with WWE, one source within the company provided clarification on the rumours.

Further speculation regarding a surprise jump to WWE was generated as Pro Wrestling Tees gave the update that they were told to remove all Okada merchandise. However, according to Dave Meltzer, this is more indicative of the New Japan relationship ending as opposed to interest from a United States promotion.

On the Okada front, the Pro Wrestling Tees thing regards no longer being able to sell New Japan merchandise of his. It’s not a sign of going to WWE. It’s not a sign of going to AEW either.

While WWE rumours remain prevalent, a top champion in the company has responded to Kazuchika Okada reports.
