Major Update On Championship Situation As AEW All In Weekend Begins

AEW-ROH owner Tony Khan speaks to the media

AEW and ROH are currently in Arlington, Texas, for a massive week of events, and the show-stealers will air over tonight and tomorrow. Several last-minute situations popped up ahead of All In weekend, and now Tony Khan has somewhat resolved one of the championship debacles.

The All Elite Wrestling and Ring of Honor rosters took several hits in recent months, which forced Khan and his teams to re-work multiple storylines, including some long-term ones such as the tournament to crown the inaugural ROH Women’s Pure Champion. However, injuries also created opportunities for other talents, such as Queen Aminata. Khan described Aminata’s increased AEW TV appearances as a “call-up from ROH” due to Jamie Hayter’s injury.

Meanwhile, Red Velvet suffered multiple injuries when AEW and ROH were in Mexico last month. The ROH Women’s World Television Champion was set to defend at tonight’s Supercard of Honor PPV, but she was pulled, and Khan previously announced that an interim champion will be crowned instead. The match is now being billed as a Worldwide Women’s Wildcard 4-Way.

Red Velvet is expected to miss a few weeks of in-ring action, but the worst-case scenario could be a month or two. Currently 351 days into the second-ever ROH Women’s World Television Championship reign, the AEW heel confirmed her status and issued a warning to the soon-to-be-crowned interim champion, before the participants were named.

Tony Khan took to X/Twitter this evening to announce that Supercard of Honor will feature a Worldwide Women’s Wildcard 4-Way to crown the Interim Women’s World TV Champion, who will face Velvet at a later date to be crowned the undisputed champion. The match will feature Mina Shirakawa, Persephone, Yuka Sakazaki, and Miyu Yamashita.

Yamashita worked two ROH matches in 2023, defeating Shazza McKenzie but losing to Athena, and defeated Brooke Havok last month on ROH TV. Persephone worked two 2003 matches in the original ROH, losing to Mickie James and then winning the rematch.

Shirakawa won a Trios Match at Supercard of Honor 2024, and that same year, she defeated Anna Jay, Rachael Ellering, and Taya Valkyrie on ROH TV, then defeated Leila Grey back in April. Sakazaki defeated Sandra Moone and lost to Athena in 2023, then returned to ROH to beat Leila Grey and Viva Van in 2024.
