On May 6th WWE heads to Puerto Rico for the first time since 2005 for the upcoming Premier Live Event, Backlash.
So far there are two major matches confirmed for the show with many more to follow. The first match confirmed will see the Undisputed Tag Team Champions Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn team up with Matt Riddle to take on the Bloodline crew of the Usos and Solo Sikoa in a six-man tag team match.
The other match will see Cody Rhodes take on Brock Lesnar in what promises to be a heated outing. The match came about after Lesnar brutally beat down Rhodes the night after WrestleMania 39.
Rhodes and Lesnar were scheduled to take on Roman Reigns and Sikoa in a tag team action on the April 5th edition of Monday Night Raw. However, before the match even started, The Beast attacked Rhodes, laying him out with a barrage of brutality.
Following the assault Rhodes challenged Lesnar to a fight at Backlash but a response was not forthcoming. The next week the match was made official after Adam Pearce attempted to stop Rhodes from attacking Lesnar. However, despite getting the match Rhodes still tried to get his hands on Lesnar, but he was ultimately held back by security as a duster and stetson-clad Lesanr exited the arena.
Cody Rhodes Vs. Brock Lesnar Will Headline WWE Backlash
According to Dave Meltzer on the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, it is confirmed that Rhodes vs. Lesnar is the main event of the May 6th show. He also stated the other matches he expects to be announced in the coming weeks.
Backlash on 5/6 is confirmed for Cody Rhodes vs. Brock Lesnar as the main event plus Usos & Solo Sikoa vs. Matt Riddle & Kevin Owens & Sami Zayn. It is expected that Rey Mysterio & Bad Bunny vs. Damian Priest & Dominik Mysterio, or possibly a trios match involving them, would be the other major match. It’s a sold out show with about 17,000 tickets out.
Nothing else seems clear other than Bianca Belair has a title match with Iyo Sky scheduled which has not been announced for television and Trish Stratus vs. Becky Lynch was pushed hard on Raw but was not confirmed for this PPV show.
As far as other champions, the women’s tag titles are defended on Smackdown this week as is the IC title, so if they are in play, that may happen this week. Austin Theory vs. Bobby Lashley vs. Bronson Reed could come out of the Theory vs. Lashley finish on Raw, but the feud seems far more like Lashley vs. Reed as a single.
Backlash is streaming LIVE from Puerto Rico on Saturday, May 6, at 8 ET/5 PT on Peacock in the United States and on Network everywhere else.
