On a recent episode of the Out of Character podcast, Madcap Moss revealed how the infamous shorts and suspenders attire came to be.
Madcap Moss burst onto the scene in WWE when he was a part of NXT under the name Riddick Moss. His run in NXT mostly consisted of chasing the Tag Team Championships.
He then move moved to the main roster in 2020 alongside Mojo Rawley and had a short run as 24/7 Champion. Along the way he found himself next to Happy Corbin becoming his witty sidekick.
When the WWE Universe was reintroduced to Madcap Moss alongside Happy Corbin (The Happy Folk), his attire was a long sleeve shirt with dress pants. He then started performing shirtless with shorts and suspenders, but what exactly led to this rather interesting attire?
“So the initial design was their idea, but it had matched up exactly with what I had just bought for the character by chance that week. I am not a style guru at all, I don’t know a ton about fashion or style. Corbin was out here in these great fancy suits, tailored shirts, ya know he’s got his watch collection and his Fedoras. And so it was a bit intimidating, but then when they sent me the design that they had in mind, I thought yeah this is different than what Corbin’s doing and I can make it my own and pull it off.”
“There was a SmackDown after Corbin and I had put Drew out for a month, and I came out and pretended to be Drew, I dressed as Drew and so along with that I had no shirt on. And from that point on as predicted from some guys in the locker room it was decided that I should no longer wear a shirt and I should also switch from pants to shorts.
And so then it went from like the original design of long pants to, long sleeve shirt with suspenders kind of like an old tiny jokester cracking jokes and pranking people. I thought it kind of fit with the name Madcap and Happy we were kind of like old 1930’s gangsters.”
Madcap went on to say that he was happy with the look of just shorts and suspenders and that it was a fun way to get the WWE Universe involved because some fans would cosplay as The Happy Folk.
Moss has since reverted to more traditional gear in the form of black shorts and black boots.
