Back in 2012, the man who would become AEW’s resident dinosaur, Luchasaurus, was wrestling in the WWE developmental promotion, FCW, and later NXT, under the ring name Judas Devlin. While there, he was able to work with wrestling legend Dusty Rhodes. On AEW’s Unrestricted podcast, the Jurassic Express member spoke about that experience and how The American Dream influenced his wrestling persona.
“[Dusty] was one of my only supporters down there. I was always trying to find a way to put my Master’s Degree stuff in a wrestling context. In promo class with Dusty, you would try different things all the time and he always had me try different ways to pinpoint how to do that and we couldn’t figure it out. A lot of the stuff I do now, and the way I just talk, is just me being myself, which is what he liked. As soon as I became a dinosaur and stopped trying to be a human, my sense of humor became an absurdity kind of thing and we made it work.”
He went on to discuss how he wished Rhodes could have seen the character he became.
“I wish he could’ve been there to see that because I think he would’ve loved as soon as I put a mask on. I never would have thought to do this on my own, it just organically happened. Working with him on the promo stuff, it was cool to see it come around a few years later. Everything he taught me just kinda clicked. Without that, it would have been tough for me to dive into something like this.”
Luchasaurus is now an AEW mainstay and will join his Jurassic Express teammates to face off against Colt Cabana and Dark Order’s ’5’ and ’10’ on the December 23rd ‘Holiday Bash’ episode of Dynamite.
