Sami Zayn

Renee Paquette and Sami Zayn get the chance to reconnect

Though she’s now an All Elite Wrestling team member, Renee Paquette spent eight years as a part of WWE and created some lasting friendships during her time there. One such friendship was developed with one-half of the current WWE Undisputed Tag Team Champions, Sami Zayn. Being in two different companies that travel the world makes it hard to cross paths, but there was a rare occurrence this week where Renee and Sami had the chance to reunite.

Renee was quoted back in December 2022 praising Zayn’s character work and how he’s always been a dear friend of hers:

I have loved Sami for quite some time. He is a good friend of mine. Being able to watch when he started at NXT, coming in, what’s Sami Zayn gonna do? Who’s he gonna be? What wrestling do we get to see? All those great things but getting to know Sami Zayn as a human being and now getting to see that make its way on-camera for fans to see and love and to see how well it works is amazing. The week ahead: several matches announced for 6/23 WWE SmackDown

Another week, another SmackDown in the books. However, we’ve already got several matches to look forward to for next week’s episode of the blue brand. There are some high-stakes surrounding some of the matches, too; the WWE Women’s and NXT Women’s Tag Team Titles will be unified, and Shotzi and Bayley will compete in singles action, but if Shotzi wins, she takes Bayley’s spot in the Women’s MITB Ladder Match.

You can see the current card for the 6/23 WWE SmackDown below:

Roman Reigns

Jey Uso makes his choice of sticking with his brother or choosing The Tribal Chief

We return from the final break with Roman Reigns telling Lexington, Kentucky, to acknowledge him. Here comes Jey Uso! It’s time!!

Jey paces the ring a bit and grabs a microphone. Reigns says he knows what the crowd wants: they want answers. Reigns asks if he’s in or out of The Bloodline.

Jey answers by telling Roman, “You tell me.” Jey says that it’s either Jey or it’s Paul Heyman in The Bloodline, and it’s up to Roman. Reigns tells Jey that he can pick anyone he wants to be the wiseman when he becomes Tribal Chief. Right now, this is his wiseman and no one else’s. Reigns says he was meant to bring the family to The Bloodline, but Jey is meant to maintain it. They have brought him up for three years to make him the “main event” Jey Uso because he’s meant to lead. However, not yet.

Reigns says the problem isn’t the Wiseman, the problem is Jey’s brother. He gets that they’re inseparable… Here comes Jimmy Uso, though! Jimmy says the problem is not him, the problem is Reigns. He says he acts like a leader to groom Jey, but he’s just using Jey. Does Jey believe Reigns over his brother? The crowd chants “Uso!” Reigns says the crowd wasn’t chanting for them before, and since he brought them to The Bloodline, they have main evented for the first time.

He wants to make Jey a Tribal Cheif, but he says he can’t be a twin at the same time. Reigns implies that Jimmy is wearing a mask. He gets Paul Heyman’s attention and asks who had a problem with the decision to make Jey the right hand man for him. They all look at Jimmy. “It was your brother,” says Roman.

Jey and Jimmy stare one another down. Jey asks Jimmy if what he said was true. “Look at me!” he yells. Jimmy says it is true, yes. Jey loses his cool and asks if the whole time Jimmy was doubting him. He expected that from Roman, but not his brother. He always heard to listen to his older brother his whole life, but he wishes he would have left him behind long ago. He remembers when Jimmy got hurt and Jey stepped up and become the main event player alone and it’s “all because” of Roman.

Jey says Jimmy is out of The Bloodline. “And I’m out, too!” he says. Jey with a superkick to Roman! Both Usos with a double superkick to Solo Sikoa! Roman looks on in horror and begins throwing a tantrum. The Usos with another double superkick to Roman! The Bloodline is over!!!

Roman Reigns

Roman Reigns makes his entrance

Reigns comes down to the ring with his lengthy entrance. Pyro goes off as he holds the the WWE Universal Title over his head. Jey’s decision is next!

Jey Uso

It's time for Jey Uso to make his final decision (hopefully)

Will tonight actually be the night?! We come back from the break with Jey Uso walking to the ring from the backstage area. He sees Sami Zayn sitting on a crate with his head down. Zayn stands up and nods to Jey as the crowd chants, “Ucey!”

Here comes Roman Reigns!!!

LA Knight

LA Knight vs. Santos Escobar

We come back to the show with Knight in control, flooring Santos with a headlock. He makes it to his feet but eats a knee. Escobar uses the ropes for a spinning elbow and a flying forearm smash. He delivers a tilt a whirl backbreaker, followed by a strike and a diving crossbody off of the top rope. Santos with a running knee in the corner, but Knight regains control with a tilt-a-whirl body slam. Knight with his signature jumping elbow drop for another two count.

Escobar with a kick to the chest. Knight tries to use the ropes for a victory roll but Escobar still flips him over and gets the three count for himself! Santos wins!

Knight attacks him after the match to get revenge. Mysterio runs back down to the ring to help, but LA slides out quickly and walks up the ramp as Rey looks on.

Santos Escobar

Rey Mysterio advocates for Santos Escobar winning the MITB brieface

Rey Mysterio says there are many accomplishments in his career that he’s proud of, but one of his favorite moments is reviving the LWO. He introduces Santos Escobar to the audiences, saying he is the essence of the faction and the next Mr. Money in the Bank.

Escobar says that timing is everything and he’s worked hard. He’s made a lot of sacrifices, but it was all for the opportunity of a lifetime when he competes for the MITB contract. Escobar thanks to Rey for believing in him and says he loves him. He says that he’s fighting for Rey, his family, and la raza. He’s fighting for everyone in the WWE Universe that has a dream.

Cue LA Knight! Knight immediately shoves down Rey! Escobar retaliates by setting Knight up for the 619, but he rolls out of the ring just as Rey goes in for his finisher.

Cameron Grimes

Cameron Grimes is attacked

We return from the break with a video highlighting WWE’s partnership with the Special Olympic Games in Berlin, Germany.

Cameron Grimes is interviewed backstage, talking about his time on SmackDown. Baron Corbin attacks! He tells him that his time of having fun has run out now.

Here comes Rey Mysterio!

Roman Reigns

What will Jey Uso do tonight?

Backstage, Roman asks Paul Heyman for an update. He hesitates for a long time before finally shaking his head “no” to Roman. Solo Sikoa scares Heyman off. He asks Roman if he needs to handle the situation, but Roman says to relax because they have plenty of time.

AJ Styles

AJ Styles & Michin vs. Karrion Kross & Scarlett

Styles and Michin enter first, followed by Kross and Scarlett. Kross and Styles begin, with Styles taking the immediate advantage with several strikes and a flying forearm on the floor. Michin comes in and actually hits a maneuver on Kross before Scarlett slides in. Scarlett with a nice takedown, but Michin returns with chops and a few kicks, followed by a German suplex. Styles and Kross come in and use some tandem moves on Kross. Styles with a Styles Clash! Scarlett pulls Styles out of the cover and starts teasing him.

He says, “I’m married, b*tch!” Michin pulls her out of the ring, but while AJ is distracted, he’s gets stuck in the Kross Jacket. Her uses a ripcord and his finishing tilt-a-whirl flatliner for the win! Kross and Scarlett are victorious!

Jey Uso

Will Jey Uso or Paul Heyman be out of The Bloodline?

Paul Heyman confronts Jey Uso backstage and tells him that he’s sorry for various things, including being “right” about last week and how Jimmy kicked Jey in the face last week. Heyman says it was “intentional” because Jimmy never misses a kick. He harrassed Jey some more to manipulate him, telling him he doesn’t deserve what Jimmy is doing to him. Jey says that regardless of what happens, if he stays in The Bloodline, Heyman will be out of it.

AJ Styles & Michin vs. Karrion Kross & Scarlett is next!

Charlotte Flair

Charlotte Flair appears on The Grayson Waller Effect

We come back with Iyo Sky and Bayley arguing backstage about what happened in the match between Iyo and Zelina. Shotzi walks over and says it’s every woman for herself in the MITB ladder match but they sure did work together when she lost her chance in the MITB ladder match. Bayley says she’s not on her level, which Shotzi responds by challenging Bayley to put her MITB ladder match spot on the line. Iyo accepts on her behalf, seemingly getting a bit of revenge on Bayley.

The Grayson Waller Effect begins, with Grayson saying that they will break the internet tonight with his next guest: Charlotte Flair! Charlotte makes her entrance as the crowd cheers. Waller says he wants to “Woo!” so bad right now, but he needs to focus. He brings up the Flair vs. Asuka match in two weeks on SmackDown. He says it reminds him of when Flair beat Asuka’s undefeated streak at WrestleMania 34.

Waller asks when she will become the 15-time Champion. Charlotte says it’s all a matter of time and tells Waller he can, “Woo!” Bianca Belair comes out! The EST says the accolades speak for themselves, but she needs to know how things are working around here. She earned her title shot and was told it was happening, but Flair just cut the line, “Am I trippin’ or am I trippin’?” Belair asks.

Flair says with all due respect, she didn’t write the rules and doesn’t make it the way it is. She cut the line and the line starts with her. Flair lost to Rhea at WrestleMania and didn’t get a rematch, so does she get a rematch now? Belair says she is different because she didn’t go away for three months when she lots, she stayed and demanded her rematch.

Flair asks if Belair really thinks she stepped away. Charlotte says she stepped away for a moment, but she has picked herself up 14 different times. Is she able to do the same? Belair touts about being the longest-reigning Women’s Champion of the modern era, and she didn’t need 14 times to do it. She says the future is what is important, and she will be at ringside when it is Asuka vs. Charlotte for the Women’s Title because she’s playing by her rules now.

Bianca Belaire

Bianca Belair isn't waiting for her Title shot anymore

We see a replay of the situation surrounding the WWE Women’s Championship. Adam Pearce is backstage live, and Bianca Belair and asks what is going on with her rematch. She says that she went about his rematch the right way, so if he won’t give it to her, then she’s going to do it her way whether it’s “right or wrong.”

Grayson Waller hosts The Waller Effect with Charlotte Flair is next!

Iyo Sky

Iyo Sky vs. Zelina Vega

Sky enters first, followed by Vega. These two women will participate in the Women’s MITB Ladder Match at the Money in the Bank premium live event.

The bell rings and Zelina offers a handshake. Sky shoves her in the face, inspiring Vega to use several forearms on her opponent. They trade some rapid covers, followed by a countered leg scissors to Sky. Iyo uses a dropkick, but Vega returns with a forearm. Sky comes off the second rope and stomps on the arm of Zelina. She uses a leaping hip attack on the shoulder next, and then secures Zelina in an armbar.

Vega with a quick rollup for a two, followed by a kick to the face. Bayley distracts Zelina on the ropes, but it actually works in her favor. Sky tries to roll Vega up, but Bayley is in the way. Sky and Bayley start arguing on the apron, giving Zelina the ability to do a 619 and win it! Vega is victorious!!

Sami Zayn

Here come our Undisputed Tag Team Champions!

Pretty Deadly celebrate inside the ring as Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn interrupt them to the delight of the crowd. Zayn thanks them, but says some congratulations are owed to Pretty Deadly. He says that no one, including him, expected them to win. Zayn says they won 5 minutes ago, so they need to get out of the ring. Prince tells Zayn it was cute he said all of that. But he is wondering why they just won their match and their hair still looks better than Zayn’s.

Wilson says that when they win the belts, they’re going to go out and celebrate even longer. And then they’re gonna do it eeeevvveeeennnn longer. Zayn asks Owens why this stuff isn’t bothering him after his recent blow-ups. Owens says it’s cause he’s been trying to calm down lately, but he does want to punch them in their stupid faces. Zayn agrees, but as they run to the ring, Pretty Deadly slither out of the ring and escape.

Two weeks from tonight, these two teams will collide for the Undisputed Tag Team Titles.

Backstage, we see Roman Reigns and Paul Heyman sitting together. Heyman asks Roman if he’s spoken with Jey. Reigns says no, and asks who the Tribal Chief is. When Jey is the Chief, people will reach out to him, but, for now, he’s the leader. Reigns asks if Heyman has talked to Jey, but he says no. Reigns tells him to talk to Jey immediately.

Elton Prince

Pretty Deadly steal it in the end

We return with Pretty Deadly’s Elton Prince getting punched in the gut from Ridge. Prince finds a way to bring him down with an armbar and then tags in Kit Wilson, who hits a neckbreaker for a close two. He rains down some punches and then taunts until he tags in Prince. Elton uses several shots to the gut and clotheslines to emphasize it. Prince stops Holland with clubby blows and a forearm to a downed Ridge for the two.

He secures a headlock as the crowd tries to rally Ridge back into this one. He’s fading, though! Holland makes it to his feet but is met with a chop block. Wilson is tagged back in, and Pretty Deadly try for a double-team move. Instead, they’re back body dropped over, and Ridge FINALLY tags in Sheamus. The former WWE Champion with axe handles and clotheslines to both men. He nails Irish curse backbreaker to both, followed by a rolling senton to Wilson and a body slam to Prince.

The crowd is hyped as Sheamus calls for the final brogue. Wilson avoids it, but Sheamus uses an Alabama slam for a close two broken up by Prince. Ridge brings Prince outside the ring, where Ridge is thrown into the steel steps. Wilson comes to the apron where Sheamus uses his signature ten beats of the Bodhran to BOTH of Pretty Deadly. Prince drops off at ten, but Wilson eats over 30 beats to the heart. Ouch.

Sheamus wants the Celtic Cross. He uses it on Wilson, but Prince is the legal one. He hits a leg drop out of nowhere and gets the surprise win on Sheamus!

Sheamus

The Brawling Brutes are hanging in there

We come back with Sheamus battling out of a headlock from Gallows. He escapes but eats a kick and then a Samoan drop for another two count. Backstage, Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn look on as Gallows tags in Anderson. Gallows holds his arms back as Anderson kicks him in the abdomen. Sheamus uses some strikes to the abdomen to try to come back, but he eats several forearms.

Gallows tags back in and kicks Sheamus in the ribs. He nails Sheamus with a right hand and a snap suplex. Ridge wants in, but Sheamus can’t get there! He’s stuck in a headlock. The crowd rallies, and Sheamus uses rights to try and get out. Gallows off the ropes and is met with a powerslam. Anderson tags in and cuts off The Brutes from getting a tag. Sheamus out of nowhere with The Brogue Kick for another win!

LWO is next up! Wilde and Del Torro use a tandem dropkick and synced-up swanton splashes to the outside on The Brutes. Wilde comes from the top rope with a missile dropkick. LWO trade tags, and Del Torro uses a moonsault for another two count. Sheamus tries to battle out of their grips and finally gets Ridge to get a blind tag. Sheamus hits a knee on Del Torro. Wilde comes from the top rope, but Ridge catches him with Belly to Belly. Holland with a Dominator-style finisher for ANOTHER win.

Hit Row is next up. INSTANT VICTORY as Sheamus Brogue Kicks the head off of Top Dolla. Brutes only have Pretty Deadly left!

Sheamus

The gauntlet match begins with Street Profits and Brawling Brutes

Montex and Sheamus start out, reversing each other in several ways until Ford gets Sheamus in a headlock. Sheamus comes back with a forearm smash, but is then met with a dropkick from Ford. He reverses a back suplex and chops Sheamus. Sheamus with an Irish curse backbreaker before tagging in his teammate. Holland swings Ford around with ease and then vertical suplexes him down into the mat.

Ford battles back with rights and chops, followed by an enziguri. Angelo Dawkins tags in and nails some clotheslines to Ridge. He then knocks Sheamus off the apron and hits Ridge with a corkscrew elbow. He splashes him in the corner and hits a hard right to Ridge. Holland delivers a headbutt and Sheamus gets a blind tag. Brogue kick! They win the first round!

The O.C. tags in immediately and they start going to work on Sheamus. They use a tandem neckbreaker for a close two as we go to break.

MontezFord

It's time for a gauntlet match!

Michael Cole and Wade Barrett give us a proper welcome to the show, followed by the entrance of The Street Profits. It appears the Tag Team Title #1 contender Gauntlet Match is next up!

The rest of the teams surround the ring. They will battle The Brawling Brutes’ Sheamus & Ridge Holland.

SmackDown

Let’s get it!! WWE SmackDown is underway. We see a replay from last Friday when Jey Uso challenged for the United States Title, but in the end, he never made a definitive choice about who he would align with.

We are welcomed to the show by Kayla Braxton backstage, who greets Roman Reigns as he arrives. He ignores her, but then addresses Paul Heyman and asks where Jey Uso stands in The Bloodline. Heyman sighs and exits.

Hulk Hogan recalls Andre the Giant's insane drinking abilities

Andre the Giant is one of the most legendary WWE stars of all time, even transcending into the world of Hollywood for a memorable role in The Princess Bride. But his talents didn’t end at professional wrestling or acting — a fellow legend in WWE Hall of Famer Hulk Hogan recalled in a recent interview how Andre had extraordinary drinking abilities.

“I asked Vince. I said, ‘You know here we are the night before, what are we doing tomorrow?’ Vince goes, ‘I don’t know […] I’m sure Andre will do the right thing.’ Vince wanted me to sit in the dressing room with Andre just to try to, like, make things cool, you know. I got to the building at noon and I sat next to Andre and I watched him drink three-fifths of Crown Royal.”

AEW snags legendary song for Collision Theme

Tony Khan can make some questionable decisions at times, but other times, he’s right on point with his vision. Today is one of those days where Khan has absolutely nailed it — Tony announced on Twitter today that Sir Elton John’s “Saturday Night’s Alright for Fighting” will be the official theme song for AEW Collision.

It’s official! Our opening theme for Saturday Night #AEWCollision on TNT is Saturday Night’s Alright For Fighting by Sir Elton John! While @FulhamFC
and @WatfordFC will never be best mates on the pitch, you’re now a great friend to @AEW, @eltonofficial, and we salute you, Sir!

The song was first released on John’s best-selling album Goodbye Yellow Brick Road album in 1973. It’s since gone on to be featured in countless motion pictures, video games, and television soundtracks and has also been covered by bands like Nickelback (with Kid Rock and Dimebag Darrell), Queen, the Who, Fall Out Boy, and several others.

Drew McIntyre

Ridge Holland gives update on Drew McIntyre

The Brawling Brutes and Drew McIntyre know each other well, having crossed paths several times in the past. Sheamus, the leader of The Brutes, has an extensive love/hate relationship on camera with McIntyre, so it’s opened the window for Drew to become familiar with the other two members of the faction: Butch and Ridge Holland.

In a new interview, Holland gave an update on the whereabouts of Drew McIntyre, who hasn’t been featured on WWE television since WrestleMania 39.

“He’s probably in the gym as we speak lifting two cows, the big human. He’s fine, Drew’s good. I don’t know for sure, I don’t know anything, I just know how to throw a headbutt. I think, whether it’s a month from now, two months from now, three months from now, you’ll see Drew McIntyre back in a WWE ring.”

CM Punk

AEW star appears to clap back at CM Punk's comments about Adam Page

Today has been a rather interesting day for All Elite Wrestling. Ahead of the Collision premiere this Saturday, former AEW World Champion CM Punk stopped by ESPN to discuss his mindset heading back to the company. After a fallout with The Elite back in Fall 2022, Punk still has some bitterness toward the faction, even stating that he thinks Page was intentionally trying to hurt him during a match.

Nick Jackson of The Young Bucks appeared to respond to the inflammatory comments about Hangman Page through his Instagram. Along with a photo of The Elite hitting a maneuver off the ring apron together, Jackson writes, “Not only is he good at wrestling, but he’s an even better human being.”

You can read more about this story here.

CM Punk

Have you ever wanted CM Punk's comments at the All Out Media Scrum to sound like Homer Simpson?

If you answered yes to the question above, boy, do I have a treat for you! Twitter user @BenRogerson_ managed to turn CM Punk’s voice into Homer Simpson during his infamous comments at the AEW All Out media scrum last Fall. It’s actually rather hilarious, especially when Punk becomes heated and yells things like, “I work with f*cking children!”

On a day like today, when Punk’s comments are creating another stir in the world of pro wrestling, it’s fun to look back to when his issues in AEW first began but add some lightheartedness to the mix.

You can hear the audio below:

AEW
