Lex Luger Breaks Silence On Long-Standing WWE Title Rumour

Lex Luger has revealed that Vince McMahon never guaranteed him a reign with the WWE Championship.

In one of the most famous matches of Luger’s career, The Total Package faced then champion Yokozuna in the main event of SummerSlam 1993 with the title on the line. Although Luger would defeat the Hall of Famer in the main event, as the victory was via count-out the title did not change hands.

Speaking on the Lex Expressed podcast via Ad Free Shows, Luger revealed that Vince McMahon never told him that he would be the top champion, but did state that if it was going to happen then WrestleMania 10 would have been the location due to it being held in the world’s most famous arena:

“[Vince McMahon] didn’t make me feel like I was going to be the [top] babyface, and contrary to popular belief, he never promised me the title or said that I was going to be the champion. That wasn’t part of it. So I wasn’t shocked when I didn’t get it at SummerSlam, although it would have been helpful, even if I won it and lost it, obviously, with that big of a buildup,” Luger says. “He always felt that if I was going to win the title, he’d rather do it, and make it special.

The Garden was always a very special place for events, most people know that. If he put the title on me, he wanted to do it at WrestleMania 10 at the Garden. So really, SummerSlam was never in the mix for me to win the title.

Luger continued by revealing that in hindsight it would have been a good idea to have a short title reign to give the fans that moment:

“Although, in retrospect, looking back now it probably would have been a good idea even if they took it right back off of me, it probably would have been good to come through for the fans,”

The Total Package got another opportunity to dethrone Yokozuna inside Madison Square Garden at WrestleMania 10. Luger lost the match via disqualification when he shoved special referee Mr. Perfect. Yokozuna would advance to the main event, where his 280-day reign as champion would come to an end following a defeat to Bret Hart.

On the debut episode of his podcast, Lex Luger revealed that he is under contract with WWE.
