Adam Copeland has admitted that his steel cage leap at AEW Double or Nothing wasn’t exactly necessary.
At the recent pay-per-view, the Hall of Famer successfully defended the TNT Championship against Malakai Black inside a barbed wire steel cage match. Along with the surprise appearance from Attitude Era star Gangrel, fans remember the match for Copeland’s dive from the top of the cage that sent Black through the table.
Landing badly, fans were immediately concerned for Copeland’s well-being following the impact. Looking back on what took place in a new interview, Copeland made a sobering observation.
Appearing on Busted Open Radio, the AEW star described the move as “less a leap and more a fall” and admitted that if he had made the move from a lower height it probably would have generated the same impact:
“I think I could have got the same mileage if I did it off the top rope. So, live and learn. But at the same time, I finished the match.”
“Hopefully also throughout this story, it’s a reminder of what [Malakai] Black brings to the table. And kind of just let people understand, ‘Oh yeah, by the way, there’s this group of badasses that have an insane presentation.’ So, a few missions accomplished and a setback.”
When asked about possibly returning as a new character when he comes back from injury, Copeland responded that each injury adds to his veteran character:
“Part of me goes, ‘Well, you recreate yourself.’ But each injury kind of adds itself to the character that I was already portraying, which — to be honest — is not that far removed from me at this point,” Copeland said.
“I don’t know how much I change, honestly. I think it’s just one more instance of, like, grizzled vet fighting back from another one.”
