Latest Backstage Update On Rey Fenix’s Growing AEW Situation

Rey Fenix in AEW

The latest backstage chatter on Rey Fenix’s current AEW situation is out.

For some time now, former champion Rey Fenix has been on the news. With issues concerning his current contract with Tony Khan’s promotion and his latest comments, Fenix has spoken his mind.

While it was suspected that Fenix and his brother, Penta El Zero Miedo would become free agents and likely join WWE, things did not go as planned. Although Penta is now a free agent, Fenix finds himself glued to the Jacksonville-based promotion, possibly till mid-2025, with injury time added to his contract.

On December 7th, Rey Fenix made some controversial comments on social media that caught the public eye, touching subjects about speaking the truth, and inhumane treatment, he commented,

No one stays in a place where they received inhumane treatment.

An update from Dr. Chris Featherstone, soon followed it

I received information from an AEW source on November 20 regarding the Lucha Brothers’ status, but did not report it as I was waiting for one of them to begin speaking their mind about the situation (I was told that was coming). I was also told that day that Penta’s contract was soon ending with AEW.

Rey Fenix did just that (spoke his mind), so here is some Intel I received: – “The alleged excuse that Tony Khan found out about Lucha Brothers [being] in talks with WWE is ‘fake news,’ and the real reason [will be] revealed.” – There is a “real story” behind the situation with Rey Fenix, which is a “huge injustice.” – Expect the Lucha Brothers to go more in-depth about their time in AEW when they are free and clear to do so, and “when they do, [it] is going to be ugly.”

In response to the post, Rey Fenix shared that he is contractually obligated to not speak on the matter, but will do so when gets the opportunity. Later, Fenix also shared a concerning post on social media and claimed that he was denied a doctor during his injury.

However, soon after, Fightful Select shared some backstage reports and opinions on the ongoing situation.

Backstage Reports On Rey Fenix’s Current Situation

As per Fightful Select, some sources within Khan’s promotion were reportedly caught off guard by Fenix’s allegations and social media comments. While the persistent lack of communication was acknowledged between the two parties, the sources denied any ‘inhumane’ behavior. It was also noted that the sources were aware of Fenix taking an issue with the doctors, not clearing him for competition.

Another source familiar with the situation denied the claims and marked them untrue. The source noted that the comments may be a part of an effort to “babyface themselves” in the situation. It was made clear that AEW was upset about The Lucha Bros discussing with WWE in spite of plenty of time left on their deals.

Both Penta and Fenix are in extremely high demand in the wrestling industry. It is still unclear if Fenix’s appearance for House of Glory (HOG) on 20th December was approved by AEW, or not.

As per the report, both Penta and Fenix both were heavily factored for a huge push. They, along with PAC, were originally planned to win the Trios Championships at All In. It was also noted that while Fenix was injured, PAC and Penta were suggested for a run in the World Tag Team Title tournament.

According to Fightful Select, Tony Khan can grant Rey Fenix an early release, although nothing is confirmed.
