Lanny Poffo has recalled Randy Savage being “legit” angry with Hulk Hogan as the Mega Powers exploded in 1989.

Hulk Hogan and Randy Savage united in 1987 as The Mega Powers. The sworn enemies managed to put their differences aside to form one of the most formidable teams in WWE history. However, two of the company’s biggest stars were never going to be able to co-exist forever. In late 1988, cracks began to appear in the partnership as Savage took issue with Hogan appearing to be overly friendly towards Miss Elizabeth.

The situation reached boiling point at The Main Event II in February 1989. At the event Savage and Hogan were taking on The Twin Towers. During the match Savage was knocked over the top rope into Elizabeth. At this Hogan picked up Elizabeth and carried her backstage, he later returned to the ring at the request of Elizabeth.

After the match Hogan visited Elizabeth resulting a confrontation with Savage who accused Hogan of trying to steal Elizabeth away. Savage turned on Hogan hitting him in the face with the title belt.

Speaking with Inside The Ropes’ Keith Elliot Greenberg in Issue 8 of Inside The Ropes Magazine, Savage’s brother Lanny Poffo recalled the team falling part. Poffo revealed that during the angle, Savage became “legit” angry at Hogan over how he thought he had put his hands on Elizabeth.

“And then, they did the angle where a concerned Hogan carried her to the back. And Randy freaked out because Hogan was touching her…”

“If you replay the tape, it looks like Hulk Hogan touched her boob. Hogan told me that Randy didn’t like it, legit, and asked him if touching her like that was intentional. Hogan says it was an accident, and I believe him. Back then, the company was marketing itself to kids, and would never allow someone to touch a woman inappropriately. People were getting fined for cursing in front of fans. Hogan knew better. He wouldn’t go around grabbing a boob on live television. And I never asked Randy about it.”

Poffo went on to discuss an incident that occurred when Savage and Elizabeth were next in her home town.

“But I know this. The next time Randy and Elizabeth were in (her hometown) Frankfort, Kentucky, one of her relatives said, “You promised you wouldn’t put Elizabeth in any danger,” and chewed him out. He was talking about Elizabeth getting knocked down, not Hogan touching her boob. But Randy was very careful and Elizabeth didn’t get hurt. He knew how to make it look good.”

The rivalry led to Hogan challenging Savage for the WWF Championship at WrestleMania V. At the event, Hogan eventually prevailed after hitting his rival with the leg drop.

After WrestleMania, Randy Savage replaced Elizabeth as his manager with Sensational Sherri. The pair remained apart until WrestleMania VII.

On the show Savage lost to the Ultimate Warrior in a Retirement Match. After the match, Sherri turned on him, which led to Elizabeth running from the crowd to re-join Savage. The two left the arena to a loud ovation in one of the most heart-warming moments in WWE history.
