Kyle O’Reilly is set for a showdown with Kushida after laying down a challenge to the Cruiserweight Champion on the most recent episode of NXT.
The match was result of another wild night on the black and gold brand with tensions running high across the board.
The show opened with NXT General Manager William Regal seemingly ready to step down from his post. However, Regal was quickly interrupted by Karrion Kross who goaded the long-serving GM. As Kross taunted Regal, Samoa Joe shockingly returned and made his way to the ring. Joe initially turned down the offer to replace the Brit, instead agreeing to be his enforcer.
Joe wasted no time making his presence known as he and Regal soon came across a brawling Kyle O’Reilly and Adam Cole backstage. As Regal tried to diffuse the situation he announced that O’Reilly and Cole would face each other once more at The Great American Bash. In addition they would both be in action next week (June 22nd) and would be able to pick their own opponents.
This news did little to calm the situation as the pair continued to brawl with Cole pushing Samoa Joe out of the way. Not taking kindly to the shove, Joe swiftly choked out the former NXT Champion leaving him laying.
Later on in the night as a debuting Trey Baxter, battled Kushida, O’Reilly kept a watching brief at ringside. Following the match, the former NXT Tag Team Champion challenged the Cruiserweight Champion.
The latest bout between O’Reilly and Cole will look to put to bed the long-running feud between the pair. The Undisputed Era exploded at NXT TakeOver: Vengeance Day in February after Cole delivered a shocking superkick to O’Reilly. This led to the two men squaring off in an unsanctioned match at NXT TakeOver: Stand & Deliver.
While O’Reilly eventually pinned Cole after a brutal contest, the rivalry has continued to simmer.
