Kushida Comments On Kyle O’Reilly, Admits Nearly Retiring 4 Years Ago

Kushida & Kyle O'Reilly

NXT Cruiserweight Champion Kushida has commented on his recent clash with Kyle O’Reilly, revealing why the match was so special.

On the June 15th episode of NXT, Kyle O’Reilly continued his feud with Adam Cole with the pair being found brawling backstage. An irate William Regal announced that the pair will meet once again at The Great American Bash, but he wasn’t quite done there. NXT’s General Manager also announced that both Cole and O’Reilly would be able to pick their opponents for the June 22nd episode.

While Cole didn’t wind up picking his poison on the show, O’Reilly stepped up to challenge Cruiserweight Champion Kushida.

Despite there being no title on the line, the match was a stunning display of technical skill, with both men displaying a ‘never say die’ attitude. O’Reilly eventually snatched the win in a closely fought contest, reversing the Hoverboard Lock into a pin. Immediately after the match, the pair embraced in the middle of the ring in a show of respect.

Posting on social media after the match Kushida reflected on the clash and why it was such a special occasion. The ‘Time Splitter’ revealed that he nearly retired due to ill-health four years ago, adding that around that time he had a match with O’Reilly.

After the match the Japanese Superstar spoke with O’Reilly, saying that it would great to have the same match in WWE one day.

The upcoming bout between O’Reilly and Cole will look to put to bed the long-running feud between the pair. The Undisputed Era exploded at NXT TakeOver: Vengeance Day in February after Cole delivered a shocking superkick to O’Reilly. This led to the two men squaring off in an unsanctioned match at NXT TakeOver: Stand & Deliver.

While O’Reilly eventually pinned Cole after a brutal contest, the rivalry has continued to simmer.
