Kurt Angle is bewildered just as much as the fans that he never got a five-star match courtesy of Dave Meltzer.
The Olympic Hero spoke with Chris Van Vliet in a new interview and an ongoing topic The Kurt Angle Show has been Meltzer’s omission of five star’s from Angle’s “Wrestling Observer resume.” Angle isn’t super affected by never getting the nod, but he is surprised at such a statistic.
“I don’t know if Dave likes me or not or what’s going on. But you know what, it’s his opinion, I will respect that. I do understand. He’s very knowledgeable with wrestling. Maybe he just doesn’t like my style. I don’t know.
“But it’s unfortunate that I’ll [never] have a five-star match from him considering that people take his word as valuable. You know, they look at him and say, ‘Okay, this is the guy that rates the matches, and he’s pretty accurate with it.’ So you know, I just, I don’t know what to say – I’m really surprised. I haven’t had one five-star match. But, you know, that’s his opinion. And I have to respect that.”
Dave Meltzer Reacts To The Kurt Angle Criticism
The topic of Kurt Angle sans five-stars has been raging for weeks and before Angle’s interview with Van Vliet, Meltzer addressed the blowback he was getting from not bestowing such gold on the Olympic Gold Medalist.
“I don’t know if Kurt ever won a match of the year, and that’s the deal. That doesn’t mean Kurt’s not a fantastic wrestler if he never won a match of the year. He got all kinds of matches that have been highly rated throughout his career. It’s not about five-star matches. If you’re gonna do that you can count up four-star matches, and Kurt had a whale number of four-star matches.”
Another name star who doesn’t take Meltzer’s match ratings as gospel is Seth Rollins, who respects the historian that Meltzer is, but thinks something such as star ratings is “silly.”
