The final of this year’s G1 Climax tournament has finally been determined: Kota Ibushi will face SANADA to see who will challenge for the IWGP Heavyweight Championship at Wrestle Kingdom 15 next January.
The match was made official earlier today when SANADA managed to defeat his former Los Ingobernables De Japon partner EVIL to become the winner of this year’s B Block. Kota Ibushi became the A Block winner yesterday after he defeated Taichi to reach 14 points. In yesterday’s main event, Jay White failed to defeat Tomohiro Ishii to equalise with Ibushi, which would have given White the overall block win as he managed to defeat Ibushi on day three of the tournament.
This marks the third year in a row Ibushi has reached the finals of the G1 Climax, having lost to Hiroshi Tanahashi in 2018 but winning the tournament last year by defeating Jay White. SANADA, meanwhile, has never reached the finals of the tournament before – having competed in every G1 since 2016 but ending with eight points all four times.
The overall winner of the tournament will go on to face the IWGP Heavyweight Champion, currently Tetsuya Naito, in the main event of Wrestle Kingdom next year. This title shot isn’t guaranteed, however, as the G1 winner typically defends their title opportunity before their scheduled match – though no tournament winner in history has lost their shot through a defence prior to their Wrestle Kingdom challenge.
Kota Ibushi Vs. SANADA will take place tomorrow morning in the main event of the final G1 Climax 30 show which begins at 7am UK time. The rest of tomorrow’s card is currently unknown and will be revealed later tonight.
