Former WCW United States Champion Konnan has claimed that WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns has more influence over the wrestling business than CM Punk.
Punk made waves in August when he ended his seven-year exile from the wrestling business and debuted in front of a rabid hometown Chicago crowd for All Elite Wrestling. The appearance which was heavily rumoured drew record viewers to AEW Rampage, with the Friday night programme not quite being able to replicate the numbers from Punk’s debut week since.
Roman Reigns has been head and shoulders above the competition since he returned to WWE in August 2020 with a new attitude and Paul Heyman by his side. The Big Dog gave way to The Tribal Chief with Reigns now holding the WWE Universal Championship for well over a year, swatting away challengers such as Kevin Owens, Jey Uso, Daniel Bryan, and Edge.
Speaking on his Keepin’ It 100 podcast, Konnan answered a question from a listener as to whether CM Punk or Roman Reigns were more influential in the wrestling business. For Konnan, the answer can be found at The Head Of The Table:
“I think that for one night or one month, CM Punk was. For the whole year, what Roman has been able to do, increase ratings, increase buzz, maintain a great storyline for over a year with different guys, get an aura about him that only The Rock’s probably gonna defeat. I think he’s been way more influential.”
WWE has confirmed that Roman Reigns will face WWE Champion Big E in a Champion vs. Champion match at the upcoming Survivor Series.
