Konnan has lifted the lid on how the surprise appearance from Ric Flair at Triplemania came to be.
At AAA’s showpiece event, The Nature Boy, Ric Flair stunned fans both in person and across the world by walking the isle with his son in-law Andrade El Idolo. Andrade was originally meant to be managed on the night by Konnan, but with the arrival of Flair, he jumped sides to link up with the Mexican’s opponent Kenny Omega.
Speaking on his Keepin It 100 podcast, Konnan revealed how the appearance came about. The former WCW star explained that Andrade was originally meant to be accompanied by a Mexican singer, but the deal fell through.
Konnan later found out that Flair would be travelling to the show with Andrade as his guest, so naturally asked if the Hall of Famer would be interested in being part of the show.
“Originally, we were going to bring it up Andrade with this Mexican singer that’s mega popular, but that fell through. (Andrade) told me that maybe Ric was going to come with him to the show, but as a guest, just to watch it. That’s when I first thought, ‘If he’s gonna be there as a guest, why doesn’t he just be your second?’ (Andrade asked Ric) and he said ‘yeah,'” recalled Konnan. “Basically, I thought, If Flair comes out, that would be cool because no one is expecting it. When I told them when they are on the plane, ‘Make sure when you get to the airport, there are fans at the airport and they know what hotel you stay at, make sure he wears a hat, a mask, a jacket, something.’ He goes, ‘Nah, he doesn’t want to wear a jacket. He’s in a pink shirt and has gold chains.’ That’s Flair being Flair, right?”
While accompanying Andrade to the ring was one thing, Flair ended up getting involved with the action. The 16-time World Champion delivered some trademark chops to Konnan and Omega before locking Konnan in the Figure Four.
“Once I knew that he was the second, I asked Andrade, ‘Can you ask Flair if he’d be fine with chopping Kenny and chopping me?’ He goes, ‘Yeah, he can do that.’ When we got to the dressing room, he was in his suit and chains, full Flair. He was telling me about our match at Bash at the Beach and then broke out into Hindu squats in a suit,”
It has also been revealed that putting the match itself together was far from straightforward. Initially, AEW requested that Omega retain his championship, as they didn’t want their World Champion to be defeated in another promotion. However, when Omega found out Flair was going to be involved, he reportedly then pitched to lose.
The decision was later taken by AAA owner Dorian Roldán Peña that Omega would retain.
Just prior to his appearance at Triplemania, Omega lost his IMPACT World Championship to Christian Cage on AEW Ramapage. The pair will meet again at AEW All Out on September 5th for Omega AEW World Title.
