Kofi Kingston Discusses Scrapped Plans For WrestleMania Match With Mustafa Ali

Former WWE Champion Kofi Kingston has discussed how plans for a WrestleMania 37 bout with Mustafa Ali were scrapped by the company.

The history between Mustafa Ali and Kofi Kingston dates all the way back to early 2019. Ali was scheduled to be part of the Elimination Chamber for Daniel Bryan’s WWE Championship but had to withdraw from the bout due to injury.

New Day star Kofi Kingston took Ali’s place in the match and although unsuccessful on that occasion, the groundswell of support Kingston received led to ‘KofiMania’ running wild at WrestleMania 35 and the veteran capturing his first WWE Championship.

With that story in WWE’s back pocket, a confrontation between Kingston and Ali seemed destined to occur down the line but it never really took off. Now it looks unlikely a feud between the two men will ever come to fruition in WWE after Mustafa Ali announced he had requested his release from the company.

Speaking to Metro before news of Ali’s request broke, Kofi Kingston explained how the stars were on a collision course for WrestleMania 37 before plans – as they often do – changed:

“It was perfect! It was written, you didn’t even have to go out of your way to creatively write anything else, it was perfect! But alas, that’s not the direction that the office, I guess, wanted to go in. I was told a few things, and we start working towards those things we’re told, and then all of a sudden it’s not those things. That’s really kind of standard fare for us.”

“It was really disappointing, man, because I think he’s so amazing in the ring and such an innovator. He finds ways to do the littlest things in such a different way, but he puts his own spin on it. He has a great mind for the business and a great mind for storytelling. He’s not being told to do that, that’s just him taking advantage or trying to make the most of what’s been given to him.”

At WrestleMania 37 in 2021, Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods lost the Raw Tag Team Championship against AJ Styles and the giant Omos. Mustafa Ali, on the other hand, had to settle for a spot in the Andre The Giant Memorial Battle Royal that took place on the SmackDown before WrestleMania itself.
