On the December 30th edition of Friday Night SmackDown, Kevin Owens will team with John Cena to take on Sami Zayn and Roman Reigns.
The match means Cena retains his record of wrestling at least once every year since he debuted on WWE’s main roster back in 2002. There is also the small matter of his history with Undisputed WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns and Kevin Owens. Although Cena and Owens are on the same page in 2022, the latter famously made his main roster WWE debut by challenging Cena for the United States Title back in 2015.
Kevin Owens Tips Hat To John Cena
Ahead of the match on SmackDown, Kevin Owens sat down with the New York Post to look back over the year and his long-running friendship and in-ring rivalry with Sami Zayn. With regard to the bout on the blue brand, Owens heaped praise on Cena, revealing that he has helped him become a better performer.
“John and I kind of mended fences a long time ago,” Owens said. “We haven’t been on opposite sides of the ring for awhile. He’s been an incredible valuable person to talk to about WWE and wrestling in general for so long. Even when we were rivals, if you want to call it that, he was a great sounding board for ideas and anything I could do to get better as a performer. He was at the very top of the business for so long, I couldn’t have imagined not using that resource.”
Speaking elsewhere, Owens described teaming with Cena as a “full-circle moment” given how he arrived on the main roster.
It has also been announced that SmackDown will see Ronda Rousey defend her SmackDown Women’s Title against Raquel Rodriguez, while Solo Sikoa takes on Sheamus.
