Kevin Nash has revealed the surprising origin of his trademark ‘Big Sexy’ moniker, noting the inspiration as being Paul Newman!
The two-time WWE Hall of Famer has utilised the moniker of ‘Big Sexy’ for the majority of his career, revealing on his Kliq This podcast that the late Academy Award winner Paul Newman inspired him to adopt the name.
Speaking with co-host Sean Oliver, Kevin Nash explained how seeing Newman be deemed “sexiest man” encouraged him to say the same about him live on WCW television:
“You’d have to go with the origin of ‘Big Sexy’. My wife and I were sitting in bed, and we’re watching television. And at the time, Paul Newman was still alive and he was on one of the talk shows. And they kept saying like, ‘The sexiest man, Paul Newman’. I looked at my wife and I said it’s amazing, if somebody’s deemed sexy, they’re sexy. I said if you saw Paul Newman like, making a Slurpee with his flat f*cking ass at a 7-Eleven, would you really think that was a sexy old guy?
Kevin Nash continued, explaining how he’d originally planned on waiting until dying his hair blonde:
I then said I’m gonna go on f*cking TV Monday and I’m gonna call myself ‘Big Sexy’. And I waited until I blonde my hair, but I think I did call myself ‘Big Sexy’. Then I blonde my hair and then it just stuck and all of a sudden, instead of getting the older women scream or the [deep voice scream], I started getting the [high pitched scream]. So obviously [it worked].”
Kevin Nash has utilised similar nicknames throughout his career, including ‘Big Daddy Cool’ and ‘The Silver Fox’. However, ‘Big Sexy’ is undoubtedly his most well-known, being used for the duration of his WCW career onwards; even in the then-TNA, when Nash had a full head of grey hair, he remained ‘Big Sexy’.
The six-foot-eleven former basketball player rejoined WCW in June 1996, joining Scott Hall to form The Outsiders and ultimately, The nWo. He amassed five reigns as WCW World Heavyweight Champion and nine as WCW World Tag Team Champion during this time, last competing at February 2001’s SuperBrawl Revenge.
Kevin Nash is now contracted to WWE on a legends deal, representing the organisation and making occasional televised appearances. He last appeared at WrestleMania 37, during which The nWo was inducted the WWE Hall of Fame.
