Triple H and Stephanie McMahon’s on-screen wedding was one of the most iconic moments in Attitude Era history, and it’s all thanks to Kevin Kelly!
Although Kevin Kelly largely worked on-screen for WWE in announcing roles, the real-life Kevin Foote was also responsible for creating some of the Attitude Era’s most memorable storylines, one of which was the marriage between Triple H and Stephanie McMahon.
Going down at a drive-through ceremony in Las Vegas, the pair were hitched when ‘The Game’ drugged Stephanie to ruin the planned wedding between her and Test. Together, they soon officially embraced, revealing it as a ruse to anger Vince McMahon.
Kevin Kelly has revealed himself as the story’s originator, as he noted on the latest Art of Wrestling with Colt Cabana:
“I had this idea – the idea came from my wife because we’re both big soap opera fans – the whole love triangle thing with Stephanie McMahon, Test, are they gonna get married? Triple H, of course, being the thorn in the side of Vince, he was gonna do anything he could to ruin anything Vince wanted and ruining the wedding would be the best way to do it.
Now what I pitched was different than what they did. Stephanie at the time had gotten dinged like the week before, she got caught up in the wash in some fight and I pitched it like so something happens again and she gets knocked loopy. Later on in the night, after the main event, what, there’s a wedding going on?
We see the long hair, you know the shot from behind, Stephanie in her dress, we assume it’s Test and then she turns, she’s kind of loopy after exchanging vows, ‘You’ve made me the happiest woman in the world’ and it’s not Test, it’s Triple H [saying], ‘Oh you have no idea how happy you’ve just made me.’ So I wrote it up in a big email, sent it to Vince [McMahon], Kevin Dunn, JR, etc. and Vince wrote back in 5 minutes in all caps, ‘THAT’S GREAT SH*T.’ […] They did it their own way but eventually, that’s what we got.”
Triple H and Stephanie McMahon’s wedding occurred on the 29 November 1999 Monday Night Raw broadcast, and would go on to be named the twelfth greatest moment in the red brand’s history in August 2013.
The duo have since been aligned both in real-life and on-screen, with their legitimate marriage being made official on 25 October 2003. Together, they’ve competed in a handful of tag team matches together, last facing – and losing to – Kurt Angle and Ronda Rousey at WrestleMania 34 in Rousey’s WWE in-ring debut.
Kevin Kelly also recently revealed how he was responsible for creating the famed ‘Stone Cold’ Steve Austin vs. Mr McMahon rivalry.
