On November 23rd, 2022, Kenny Omega had his match on AEW Dynamite since late August. He wrestled in the second of seven scheduled six-man tag matches alongside The Young Bucks against the Death Triangle trio of PAC, Rey Fenix and Penta el Zero Miedo.
The match, which took place in Chicago, also featured a loud and animated crowd. It was during this match that Omega and his fellow Bucks made some not-so-subtle gestures towards CM Punk.
Kenny Omega uses GTS in match, thanks KENTA
The match included several obvious references to CM Punk, who was not present despite the show taking place in his hometown. Omega made Punk’s Go to Sleep gesture and then hit the move, only to get a two-count.
Later, Omega took to Twitter to comment on his use of the Go To Sleep. But instead of mentioning Punk, he referenced KENTA, the former Hideo Itami, instead.
For anyone unaware, the Go To Sleep was invented by KENTA long before CM Punk started using it. This fact was even referenced in a short scene in Punk’s ‘Best in the World’ special released by WWE many years ago.
But despite KENTA having created the move, the GTS is more associated with Punk than anyone else. This was true when KENTA was in WWE; even though that was his finisher, fans reacted to it as if it were a Punk reference instead of something to be associated with KENTA.
Kenny Omega’s tweet also included a Bullet Club reference since both men were part of the same stable at different points.
There hasn’t been any comment from Punk on the matter as of yet. However, according to Dave Meltzer, those within Punk’s inner circle weren’t happy with Kenny Omega’s GTS or any other actions referencing him made during that match.
