Kenny Omega has hinted that another tournament could be coming to AEW soon.
Along with the annual Owen Hart Foundation and Continental Classic Tournaments, All Elite Wrestling has been known to put on tournaments to determine new holders of vacant championships or to set up future number one contenders. When responding to a fan question, the International Champion noted that another format has been discussed.
When asked which female wrestler he would want to face in a singles match on his Twitch stream, Omega stated in his response that a mixed tag team tournament has been pitched:
“I keep hearing every now and then that, you know, it gets tossed around… every now and then in AEW, the ramblings of having the mixed tag matches tournament — oh! Athena would be good (to face in a singles match). She really would be. Yeah, that’d be actually a real good match. But yeah, I keep hearing about the possibility of maybe doing this tournament.
So I’ve put more thought into what a tag team would look like, rather than what a singles would look like, and then yeah, someone had said Mayu Iwatani and I’m thinking, yeah, that’d be cool to have her and someone team up or Starlight Kid and somebody team up. Those are two of my favorites from STARDOM for sure right now, and then of course, just countless others that have something special. Chihiro Hashimoto, yes. She’s incredible too. She would dump me on my head so terribly (he laughed).”
Although the concept has not been seen in AEW, WWE previously held 2 Mixed Match Challenge Tournaments in 2018.
Why Rumoured Kenny Omega Match Didn’t Happen
After more than a year away from the ring, Omega made his return to action in January 2025 at the first-ever Wrestle Dynasty show in Japan. Having since returned to AEW, it has been reported why a Kenny Omega match did not take place.
H/t to POST Wrestling.
