Kenny Omega Retains AAA Mega Championship At Triplemania XXVIII

Current AEW World Champion Kenny Omega continued his momentum by successfully defending the AAA Mega Championship at the promotion’s Triplemania XXVIII event in Mexico City.

Challenger Laredo Kid, who shared an AEW ring with Omega back at Fyter Fest 2019, was flanked by promotion favourite El Hijo de Vikingo whilst Omega was supported by longtime running buddy Michael Nakazawa.

After a thrilling back and forth contest, which saw interference from both Vikingo and Nakazawa, Omega retained the title following an avalanche One Winged Angel.

Post match, ‘The Cleaner’ snubbed Laredo Kid’s handshake offer, leaning yet further into the unsportsmanlike conduct that saw him scoop the AEW Title from Jon Moxley.

It remains to be seen whether Nakazawa will be permanently drafted into Omega’s AEW storyline with Don Callis, but given that both Impact and AAA now appear to be canon, it would not come as a surprise.

In a post match interview backstage, Omega effectively called out Vikingo as a potential next challenger for the Mega Championship.

For his part, Vikingo (who has taken much of the year off due to the pandemic) is widely thought of as a generational talent in Mexico and any contest between the two would likely do big business for AAA.

Omega will now continue his busy schedule, appearing on Impact Wrestling this coming Tuesday before competing against ‘The Bad Boy’ Joey Janela in a No DQ title eliminator on Wednesday’s edition of AEW Dynamite.
