Kenny Omega has commented on what he has planned for his life once he retires from in-ring competition.
Kenny Omega is today viewed as one of the greatest in-ring talents the world has ever seen, with his legendary runs in New Japan Pro-Wrestling, Dramatic Dream Team, and now All Elite Wrestling working succinctly to back up these claims. Once he does hang up his boots, though, “The Best Bout Machine” has laid out his plan.
Talking to Dave Meltzer and Garrett Gonzales on a recent broadcast of Wrestling Observer Radio, the former AEW World Champion discussed the possibility of transitioning into a backstage role (h/t Fightful):
“I get a lot out of being an agent; I really enjoy that. I don’t think I could ever have a dojo or a school. A big part is I’m just too lazy to organize something like that. For me to be in a position where I could teach or give advice or layout matches, I find it very personally fulfilling. If there were ever an opportunity like that in wrestling once I am done actively, I feel like I would be happy in the workplace, being able to do that.”
Omega continued, discussing the joy he says in some of AEW’s agents, like Jerry Lynn and Dean Malenko, when a match they’ve helped plan has gone down a treat. Kenny describes the feeling as reminding him of when he coached basketball:
“When I would do a girls’ match that had high stakes, and they knocked it out of the park, it’s an incredible feeling, and it brought me back to when I would coach basketball. I love being a coach, and I love being in that position, and even if I’m not a performer, if there is something I can take from professional wrestling and find it fulfilling.”
Kenny Omega has long been viewed as the driving force behind AEW’s women’s division, going so far as to criticise the promotion for its lack of women being featured on televised programming. Before Rampage debuted in August 2021, he spoke about wanting the show to spotlight the talented women’s roster.
Signing with All Elite Wrestling in January 2019 as both an in-ring performer and an Executive Vice President, the Canadian-born Kenny Omega is a former AEW World Champion and AEW World Tag Team Champion, which he held alongside “Hangman” Adam Page.
