AEW Champion Kenny Omega has fanned the flames between AEW and WWE saying that WWE is “desperate” and relies on bringing in former stars.
All Elite Wrestling is not even three years old with its flagship show AEW Dynamite soon set for its second anniversary show on TNT. But in that time the upstart company has managed to attain regular ratings of one million-plus every week and handily beat NXT the majority of weeks the two shows went against each other in the ‘Wednesday Night Wars.’
More recently, AEW Dynamite has even beaten WWE’s own flagship show, the 28-year-old RAW in the key demo rating of 18-49 which is often said to be crucial to advertisers.
With AEW on an upswing in recent weeks with the addition of stars such as CM Punk and Bryan Danielson, Kenny Omega feels WWE is getting desperate and that AEW was able to close the gap on its competitor during the pandemic era of wrestling.
Speaking to Tokyo Sports, Omega stated:
“At the start, there was a huge gap between WWE and AEW. (AEW) was just some fledgling promotion after all. But have you realized how the tables have turned? WWE is desperate. They keep bringing back legends every other week. COVID is a terrible thing, and we never wanted it to happen but it is what it is.”
In recent months John Cena, Brock Lesnar, and Goldberg have all been featured on WWE television. Lesnar is scheduled to face Roman Reigns for the WWE Universal Championship at the upcoming Crown Jewel event.
