Kazuchika Okada Wins G1 Climax 31 After Controversial Finish

Kazuchika Okada celebrates

Kazuchika Okada has claimed victory in the G1 Climax 31 tournament despite his bout with Kota Ibushi coming to an abrupt and unplanned finish.

Five-time IWGP Heavyweight Champion Kazuchika Okada has won the G1 Climax 31 tournament. However, his victory came in somewhat unfortunate circumstances.

The clash with Kota Ibushi was well underway when Ibushi climbed to the top rope looking to land a Phoenix Splash on his rival. As Ibushi leapt from the corner, Okada rolled out of the way which left the now airborne Ibushi to land on the mat.

It quickly became apparent that Ibushi was in great discomfort as he immediately grabbed his right arm. After going over to check on the fallen star the referee then called for the bell, leaving Okada as the winner.

Medical personnel rushed to the ring, before seemingly trying to pop back in Ibushi’s dislocated shoulder. Despite the injury, Ibushi wanted to continue, but was eventually led away as Okada celebrated in the ring. After being presented with the trophy, Okada addressed the crowd saying it’s not how he wanted to win and that he would face Ibushi again.

With victory, Okada earned a shot at the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship at Wrestle Kingdom 16, which is set to take place on January 4, January 5 and January 8, 2022.

After the show, Tama Tonga issued a challenge to Okada for the briefcase as he was the only man to beat him in the tournament.

The win marks Kazuchika Okada’s third in the tournament, after he also emerged victorious in 2012 and 2014.
