Kazuchika Okada opened up about his desire to face AEW stars CM Punk and Bryan Danielson before they hang up their boots.
Arguably wrestling’s biggest winner in 2021 was the so-called ‘Forbidden Door.’ Kenny Omega and Christian Cage both held the IMPACT World Championship, The Good Brothers made numerous appearances in AEW and New Japan legends Minoru Suzuki, Satoshi Kojima and Yugi Nagata traded chops with AEW’s finest.
While NWA EmPowerrrr featured women from numerous promotions and NWA’s women occasionally wrestled in AEW.
Deonna Purrazzo also stands as the current AAA Reina de Reinas Champion after vanquishing Faby Apache at AAA Triplemania XXIX.
Speaking on the eve of Wrestle Kingdom 16, one of New Japan’s finest Kazuchika Okada, has more than hinted that he would be interested in locking horns with CM Punk and Bryan Danielson. In conversation with Justin Barrasso of Sports Illustrated, Okada said that facing the two AEW’s biggest stars would result in a couple of incredible matches.
“Danielson and Punk would make for some incredible matches,” Okada says. “A lot of those dream match scenarios are about getting excited for the possibilities, and once the match is done, it’s done. So it is important to keep that excitement and anticipation, I think. Still, if we wait too long, they’ll both retire eventually, so I want to face them both while they’re still active.”
In recent weeks, The Best Friends joined CHAOS, sparking speculation that some AEW could be heading to New Japan in the near future. Something that Okada said he would be very much in favour of.
“The Best Friends were part of CHAOS when they were in New Japan, and with the door to AEW being opened a bit, it added more possibilities,” Okada says. “[Tomohiro] Ishii was able to come into AEW from CHAOS, and if Orange Cassidy and the Best Friends were able to show up in New Japan, there is no doubt that would be a lot of fun. The sooner the whole pandemic settles down, the better as far as that’s concerned.”
Kazuchika Okada is scheduled to face Shingo Takagi for the IWGP Heavyweight Championship on night one of Wrestle Kingdom 16. The winner will go on to face Will Ospreay on the second night of NJPW’s banner event.
